Default Dipstick issues?

Well this started last month when i checked my oil and the dipstick said i had none, so rushed to my local autozone and bought 4qts of 10w40 mobil one fully synthetic and a K&N oil filter. I was scared cus i thought i was driving around with 0 oil, when i change my oil, 3qts of old oil still came out, so im wondering how come the dipstick told me i had none instead of being short. Now that im checking it, once again it says i have 0, wtf might be the problem, im about to go buy new oil and filter just to be on the safe side. NOTE*** I am leaking oil but im loosing around 1qt a month, nothing serious, im just wondering how come the dipstick started showin no oil all the time.

Oh my....
Most dipsticks only show the 1st 2 or 3quarts on the dipstick. It doesn't show the entire oil pans worth. But it sounds like you are burning or leaking oil pretty rapidly. need to fix that soon or you will run it too low and burn it up.

Take care of your problem as soon as possible. Is it leaking from the oil pan or rear main? Did you try to change your PCV valve?

This might sound stupid but make absolutely sure you're on a level surface when you take the reading, and that the dipstick itself isn't warped or bent. Warm up the car, turn it off and let it sit for 10 min, then try taking the reading again. You shouldn't be reading nothing on the stick and have 3 qts of oil draining out.
