Default Mechanic is usually spot on

I need a hand finding out what's going on with my 93 CX hatchback

- the oil light comes on after she's warmed up (recent head gasket and HEAD replaced, it was cracked, blowin' white smoke before, now the oil light goes on intermitently)

- told my trusty mechanic, he took it for days, let 'er run but gave it back - nothing changed (except a signal).

Hasn't lost oil but it still freaks me out and i want to visit family 4 hours away thru the mountains here in Canada.

My mechanic had someone die in the family and really just wanted to help me out... don't have the heart to go back again and i don't trust anyone else.

Can i just drive it and hope for the best? The oil light comes on and goes off in response to the gas pedal.

The oil light in a Honda uses a threshold sensor, anything above 10psi and the light stays off and once oil pressure drops below 10psi the light clicks on. I wouldn't drive the car another foot until you can verify the oil pressure. I would personally install an after market oil pressure gauge first, then if that displays a low oil pressure situation I would start at the oil pump. If it does not display low oil pressure, there is a fault in either the Oil pressure switch or the wiring connected to it.

Could very well be just a bad oil pressure sensor too. I've worked on a few cars that would turn on the oil pressure light when you weren't on the throttle but then would turn it off as soon as you hit the gas. Turns out the pressure sensor was throwing false readings. Replaced the sensor and no more problems.

I would install a gauge to be safe...check that and then if the readings arent low, then look at the sensors. This could turn into a huge problem if your not carefull...(aka blown engine)

Sounds like your oil pump is failing. It is very rare that your sensor is bad, its an on off sensor. If there is over 150k miles on the motor (or close) i would replace the pump.
