As the title states, I'm having a rattling issue in my tranny and have no idea what could be causing it. The rattle is there when I start the car, but it goes away after I depress the clutch. Is my tranny going or is it my clutch? Btw, the tranny shifts fine with no grinds. Also, I have a rattle at about 3k rpm, anything above that it goes away. I've got it narrowed down to the engine bay, but could the tranny be causing this rattle as well?? Any insight would be great.
Thanks in advance

you sure its your tranny and not like a heatshield hitting the exhaust? my buddy had exact problem and thought his trans was going just because it sounded like his trans when it was actually just a heat shield was rusted and rattling

Yeah I know it's the tranny, because the noise goes away when I depress the clutch.

Thanks for the link Red. This sounds exactly like the problem I have. I'll have to take apart my tranny one of these days when I have time and replace the mainshaft bearing.
One more question, would it be safe to drive with the mainshaft going? It isn't gone and the noise isn't that loud, but it's still there.

Yeah that sounds like a mainshaft bearing. I had the same problem with my civic. Dont beat on it or anything like that untill u get it replaced. After so long it will tear up ur mainshaft seal and fluid will pour into the bell housing. I know this from experience.....
