Default Wont stay started without key in "START" position

Car: 88 Civic Wagon RT4WD D16A6

Problem:

I can turn the car over, and it fires up, then dies. If I hold the key in the “start” position, it will continue running normally. I have replaced cap, rotor, wires, plug wires, and plugs today but this started before then, intermitedly. As of today, its all the time. I have tried replacing the main relay with a known good one, that didn’t help. So that leaves me with something in the actual key colum ignition system, which I am very unfamiliar with. Let me be clear, when I let the key go, its not like it stumbles and dies, its like its being turned off.

Anyone had this before, and what was the solution? I did some searching but couldn’t come up with anything concrete. Thanks for any help guys.

you need a new ignition switch, they go bad all the time, very common problem

^^X3... I see this problem at least 3 times a week at the Honda dealer I work at. Replace the ignition switch... that'll fix your problem!

You guys were right, I grabed one at autozone, swapped it over and its good to go. Whats weird is everyone says this is a common problem. I have had an EF of one sort or another for over 10 years now, and I have never had this problem. Never even heard of it. Cool though, thanks for the help guys!

Autozone carries an ignition switch for our cars. Thats kinda shocking. Seems to me like that would be a Honda only part.

I think most people carry like 10 pounds of keys and do-dads on their key chain, probably exacerbates the problem over 20 or so years
