Default A/C... Replacement

Ok, so I just got the my '94 "Accorn" back from CarX.... Yea, I had to... Anyways had them check for alignment; which I already knew that it needed it... just wanted them to check in case of any other underlying problems, since the first time I tried to get the align done they told me to replace the tie rods.... like I'm going to fork over an excessive amount to them when I can do it myself... So I did. Now CarX tells me to change out the upper ball joint... So, I'll do that myself too... I found a brand new pair of L/R control arm+ball joints on EBay for $90... I think that's a good deal... (( Any opinions on that?))

Right, enough background info ("Dude, you just told me your whole life story".... sorry )

Anyways here it is they charge my A/C and tell me that it can hold a charge of freon but there is a slight leak somewhere under the dash or so... they tell me it might last the summer or it might last a year... Then they ask if I want to fork over $1700 to replace the A/C... I'm like whoa... can you say, 'probably buy a new car???'

>>>Is there a way to DIY? Writeups? Do I fork over the down payment to a new car, over to them? Any suggestions would be appreciated...
