08 SI fuel mileage questions
I am considering the purchase of an 08 Si to replace both of my current cars (16 year old Sentra SE-Rs, 1 daily driver, 1 weekend motorsports car). What kind of mileage are you Si guys really getting on the interstate? Sticker says 29 hwy. I've already got one data point of a friend getting 32mpg hwy only.
Has anyone run on 87 octane? Will the car reduce timing and just make less power? If so, what does this do to mileage?
The Si would be driven A LOT. 600 miles/week commuting + any motorsports stuff (track and autocross). Test drove one this morning and loved it.

My 07 gets on average over 30 mpg 70/30 hwy/city over the last year. The last few tanks I've been saying out of VTEC and trying to see what kind of milage I can get if I try to conserve, I hit 32.5 mpg in almost all city.
It all depends on how your drive

I'm a pretty conservative driver. I save my stupidity for the track these days. 90% of the cummute would be 70mph, cruise control, open highway.
Noted on the 87 octane. Never ever. Gotcha...

i get +30mpg with cruise control set on 70mph in my 07 si (took a little road trip about a month ago). normally, i'll get 24-26mpg on 10/90 hwy/city driving with the occasional vtec

ah, she's a beaut.
28-32 mpg easy on those things, driven hard.

I can tell you as a mechanic more (versed in cars pre 2000) that putting lower octane in a car is a big no-no. 90% of the cars will take it but do you really want to roll the dice?
As far as my mileage, in my first week I have averaged right at about 28.5mpg. This is a 40/60 mix of city and highway. Keep in mind I stay off the high cam as best I can and use cruise on the highway.
