that plug is for your cooling fans. i think its a cooling fan temp switch. but on the b18b its relocated next to the thermostat housing.

Yeah being i cant see your picture on the back of the B18A1 there is a 2 prong thing for you temp and thats for your cooling fan i also have found a B18A1 but it was a 92 and the temp sensor was on the thermostat housing and on the b18b1 the temp is on the thermostat housing so im thinking 90-91 engine on the back where the oil filter is is the 2 prong thing for the fan and... but if your starting the car its automatically already at half way i dont know what to tell you on that... sounds like you have postive battery going straight too it or something... have you ran the car until the fan kicks on... it will take a while for it to kick on but if it does start to over heat your anti freeze will kick into your resovor box then thats when you shut the car off and if the fan didnt kick on i'd say get your own fan to it so it can cool down..

like everyone said, the picture is the thermo switch for the radiator fan. That sensor has nothing to do with the guage however.

The sensor that is bad that is most likely causing your guage to flip out is a coolant teperature sending unit, which should be on the distributor side of the engine. it should be a single wire, and you should measure the resistance from the post on the plug to the engine block. I dont know what the resistance values are for the b18 sensor, so you will have to look it up, but figure those out and you will most likely have your answer.
