Is he throwing a check engine light?

His VTEC probably works fine. It's not the kind of thing that will throw you back in your seat. It's also not "like a turbo" as I've heard in the past.

You might be able to hear it more if you have an intake.

if you need, you can rev up slowly to the VTEC point and try and listen if you can hear the crossover... but intake or exhaust helps to hear it

Just so you dont get confused with that, you cant just rev it up and hit the crossover. You'll have to accelerate (have a load on the motor) to hit the crossover.

if there is no cell, check your oil level. VTEC aint nothing really special, you can feel a slight jolt but nothing out of the ordinary. If you had an intake, you will definitely hear the crossover as stated above. If you do happen to get one and still feel like it aint kicking in, check your solenoid and oil pressure. Do a search and you will find all the answers you need here. There is probably a million threads of VTEC problems. Good Luck

didnt feel like reading all the posts but, easiest way to see if vtec is working IMO is hooking up a vtec light splice vtec solenoid wire with another wire and run that to the positive side of the LED. Then just run a wire from the negative batt terminal to the negative side of the LED and DRIVE at like 5500 rpms if the light has not come on im sure your vtec isnt working my d16y8 kicks in at 5200 rpms so if the light dont turn on its not working dont leave the LED in cuz sometimes it messes up your car cuz it messed mine up... DONT freak out if that isnt true because i had it in and a week later my CEL is on so i undid the light and the problem was suddenly fixed so yeah...
