Default 1992 Accord timing belt

My son is wrenching on his Accord to get him through college. It has 215000 miles and he just did the clutch, alternator, radiator and rear brakes. However he can not get the crank shaft pulley bolt loose to change the timing belt. This is one of the last Accords from Japan, would this bolt be left hand thread?? The timing belt that is on it says Honda so I wouldn't think that a service tech would have Loctited it in, but who knows. We have heated it with a mapp gas torch and hit it with a 3/4" drive impact wrench with no success. Do we dare heat it with acetylene? The belt is severely cracked so we need to get this bolt off. What should we try next??

For some reason, the impact wrench doesn't work too well for me either. I would do the breaker bar method with an extension onto that. Like a 3 ft extensions? Also you may need a crankshaft pulley holder tool to hold the crankshaft pulley in place from turning. Use some PB blaster, and you should be able to take it out.

Lefty loosey, righty tighty.

yeah there should be no reason that a 3/4" gun won't break that loose. i use a 1/2" all day at work and maybe 3 or 4 times in last 5 years needed to use a 3/4" gun and those bolts give in fast to that gun.

With the impact gun, don't use any extensions between it and the socket. At the most, use a deep socket.

Does anyone have a DIY to do the timing belt on a '92 accord? I haven't checked mine out yet, but in the 195k miles I'm pretty sure it was only replaced once at around 100k I'd say.

I've never done a timing belt job so not sure where to even start.

On my 94 I had to use a couple of steel bars in the flywheel to hold it in place. I then used a 1/2" drive ratchet and a 2' to 3' breaker bar (drum hardware to be exact) It takes imacts not brute torque to break it free. If the car is jacked up enough for the bar to clear the floor then hop on it. It took me awhile to get mine loose but I got it eventually. Persistence is KEY

Idz21: shop manuals have a pretty understandable breakdown of how to do the timing belt. My first and only time was on my 94 and it whent flawlessly with a Haynes shop book.

Pretty much the same as the DIY for the 94 in the Accord FAQ

Damn, that doesn't look like a job that I'd be able to do myself. I thought it would be something as simple as taking out 1 bolt, removing the belt and putting the bolt back on. Looks like something I'm going to have to pay for.

well it is pretty simple. just take out the motor mount on the driver side, put a jack underneath the oil pan with a block of wood cusioning it and there u go. simple. for the bolt, impact gun should do it. just hold it! GL

I slipped a 3 foot pipe over my ratched handle and my brother and I bounced on it for a bit. Finally broke free.
