how to test tranny shifting out of the car?
so i need some help on determining whether the tranny can shift thru all the gears , but the tranny is out of the car with the shift and extensions rods not attached.
I've heard some use a screwdriver, but how do you do this? thanks.

stick a screwdriver into the shift rod(where the spring pin is installed)...shift through the gears while spinning the main shaft.
This will tell you whether all the gears mesh properly/shift properly, etc. It will NOT tell you whether any bearings are bad or any synchros/sleeves are bad- not enough speed/load on the shafts

thanks, do you mean you stick the screwdriver thru the holes in the shift rod?
then just move the screwdriver around like it was my gear shifter right?
the reason im asking all this is becos im doing an ISB replacement, and i heard that if you do not align the interlock guide bolt properly you will be locked out of gears. i still do not really know what the alignment mean since i havent opend up the tranny.

you're probably talking about a single cam trans? It has the interlock bolt that comes through from the clutch housing(allen key bolt). And yes, make sure it is completely aligned and the bolt threads smoothly until the head touches the trans.
Anytime you pull a tranny apart, you need to bench shift it first

yes, single cam d17y7. just to clarify about the screwdriver shift, stick it (screwdriver) into the hole in the shift rod, then move it around like it was a gear shift?
and when you mean aligned for the interlock bolt,...how to you tell it is aligned? the service manual says something about a interlock 'finger' aligned with the groove in the shift arm. is it really obvious when the interlock bolts and all are aligned before putting the tranny case back on?
thanks
