Default 40/40 proportioning valve question?

whats going on, recently did a rear disc brake swap on my buddies 95 vx hatch i took the rear brakes off my 94 integra. i searched and read that i needed a 40/40 proportioning valve, we got one coming. but my question is what does 40/40 exactly mean? i know what a proportioning valve does just dont know what those numbers mean. so if anyone knows, please share. and i did alot of researched here on H_T and i think the 40/40 is what i needed. 9.5disc in the front 94 integra rear brakes in back..

thanks

I remember this was told me before long time ago. Correct me if I'm wrong. But 40/40 means to put a certain amount of force onto the braking power. I know that DA 90-93 Integra are 40/30. But their braking system is still very well built. It really depends on your peference.

The 40/40 just means the amount of braking force sent to front and rear brakes...With a front wheel disc and rear drum set-up the 40/30 valve is sufficient but when you add disc brakes to the rear they need more force sent to the rear to even out the braking which is the reason that you need a 40/40 valve. hope that helps. The DA integras have 40/40 valve not the 40/30 bc they have front and rear disc brakes just like 94-01 integras.

The proportioning valve is a two piece with the stamp localed on the top piece. And it's actually stamp as 4040 not 40/40.

im just intrested in how they come up with those numbers. If i knew exactly i could be sure of the correct proportioning valve to use and have the right amount of brake pressure... instead of going off other threds.

I did a lot of reading and research on this at one time. I thought maybe it was diameter of the hole, flow rating at a certain pressure or something like that, but no.
the 4040/3030/3540/4030/3530/etc as far as I can tell must have been some sort of internal part sorting number for the manufacturer of the part.

what we can do is track which car had what number, then track back what the braking setup was on that car.
ie smaller front disk with smaller drum rear = 3030
larger front disk and disk rear = 4040

dug through my notes and found it...

3030 - 9.4" front / drum rear
3035 - 9.4" front / larger drum rear
3040 - 9.4 front / 9.3" disk rear
4040 - 10.25" front / 9.3" disk rear
4035 - 10.25" front / larger drum rear
4030 - 9.4" front / 9.3" disk

but the master cylinder size factors in there as well.
I don't have that noted.

OP: a 4040 will work fine for you, the rears will lock up after the fronts like most people want.

I also read somewhere that the numbers had to do with the internal passage sizes. That the bigger numbers passed more fluid.
I can't remember where I saw that though.
Those numbers and combos above are nice to know.
