I have a 2000 S2000 covered just 49,670 miles, there is a very noisy rattle from the engine that comes in on acceleration and then goes, is this quite common? if so can someone tell me what this is and the cure, could it be tappets, timing chain, tensioner ? Jamsan

 

a rattle? it might just be that you need a valve adjustment.. can u describe the conditions of this rattle and what it sounds like? (a tapping, a pinging, popping noise..?)

 

The hamster that spins the V-tec wheel for your vtec is hungry. Once you feed him the sound will go away

 

Thanks for your info, if the car is ticking over and you blip the throttle the noise will come in, it sounds like little ends but Iam sure its not, tappets maybe or could it be the tensioners, deff top end

 

Where is this wheel is it easy to get to and what should we feed it with?

Sounds like the TCT. Open the hood and give it throttle so you can try and find where the noise is coming from.

 

Agreed TCT, they are a common problem on ap1s

Does it happen when the motor is cold? Timing chain tensioners usually will be heard when the car is idling when cold. Hot too, but mine was loudest when the motor was cold.

 

Very wierd this topic popped up when it did. Mine is also doing this and my mechanic told me the valves need to be adjusted like someone said above.. Is this common and does it hurt the car?

 

maybe buying a 2003 s2k and it has a tapping/rattle from the head, think its the valves. But mine only starts making noise after it has been running for 8-10 min. Not too sure what it is exactly def will have it looked at before purchasing

 

The S2000 engine is a fairly noisy one. If you are worried about it, have a professional mechanic check it out before you buy. A compression test is a must!

 

Mine makes alot of noise but so did the other 10 or so i test drove. Even the brand new one that i drove was not quiet.

 

I also experiance this kinda of engine rattle. when I rev softly it suddenly drops to 300rpm and goes up. It doesnt happen often. It often happens when its cold outside (engine warmed) or after i pumped gas in.

 

put a thin header on it and it gets even noisier

 

honda reccomends getting the valves adjusted every 60k on the s2000... i did mine but the most common rattle ive came into contact is the fuel rail cover rattles quite often on them... it has yet to happen to me but ive seen it 4-5 times and the kids are like "o didnt realize it was something simple like that" ck that before you drop $ on the valve adjustment. if you wanna learn to do the valves yourself and went the specs pm me.
