S2000 Engine Problem - Snapped Conrod, smashed through side of engine...
So I bought an s2000 around 9 months ago. When I picked it up it had a reasonable service history and had done around 35,000 kms. It was a 2000 model.
I have not thrased the car, its been looked after and was almost due for a service as advised by the used BMW dealer I purchased it from when last week it started making a strange rattling noise that seemed to be coming from the engine. I stopped driving it and called the dealer, they told me to drive it down to be serviced... I started the car and barely got past the end of the street when there was a loud bang and the engine stopped...
I got out of the car and oil was spewing from underneath it, I had it towed to the dealer and they have told me that the conrod snapped and has smashed a hole the size of my fist in the side of the engine...
The car needs a new short engine and gasket kit apparently... its going to cost me around 10k AUD to get it back on the road...
Has anyone heard of this or had any serious engine issues with an S2000 before?? Im talking to Honda and although the car is out of the warranty period I really believe I should not have had this issue with the car given its a 2000 model and has only done 50,000kms.
What do you guys think???

interesting. doesn't sound likely. but sounds more like a possible sieze due to water (cold air kit installed?) or loss of oil (which isn't entirely true but could have been an extreme low). the con rod snapping though - strange indeed.
This exact same thing happened to me about a month ago. You can see pictures in my sig.
The short answer is that it happens and you were just unlucky like I was. Im sorry that you do not have anyone like hardtopguy that can help you get the repair done for a more resonable amount of money.
Wont the BMW dealer help at all since they should have approved the car before selling it?

My warranty from BMW covers it although claims are limited to 2k...
ImportSport did you take it up with Honda? Im trying to get them to do something like give me an engine at cost or for a reduced price....
I cant believe this has happened...

Well see... I was sorta... racing when my engine went. I was also well out of warrenty. If you still have any remaining warrenty left I would most definately contact honda.
I knew this was my fault, I maintain the engine and car very well but I do push it very hard and this was just poor luck. So I paid for the repair out of my own pocket.

Oh I see... I dont race... The car is out of the warranty period but given its only done 50,000km and is a 2000 model I wouldnt expect to have this issue.. would I?
unfortunately, your car is out of warrenty, only thing honda can do is "good will" the repair for you. Good luck. This has happened to owners that have tracked their car and a very rare few that daily drive it. The most likely cause is a material defect in the rod, or a bearing failure, seizure due to a lack of oil.

even if the owner over-reved the engine?

Must be nice, I tried to get my power window issue fixed, they basically told me to go to hell.
Thanks Manchester Honda.

overrevving wouldn't throw a rod, or you have to put some substantial effort into it to pull it off

Hi,
There is a guy in Brisbane that had a complete used S2000 engine for sale for $5K a while back. If you need one I'll give you his details.

I've been doing some reading lately and seems like an awful lot of s2k owners blowing motors, even with keeping oil consumption under contol and just easy daily driving...
WTF??
I have been looking into getting a few yr old S2k in the spring but now i'm not so sure i wanna chance it? Even with religious maintenance and going easy on them reliability seems like a 50/50 shot, like it could go either way- either goes ok, or really bad...

Hey, Magic, you might wanna try HondWorld. When I was on my vacation over there, I stopped to check it out, and he had a few F20C's there. I dont remember how to get there, but you took, I think, Princes Hwy, look in the phone book.......Now this was last year, but he might still have them or might know where you can get one...

i know that, i wasn't only talking about engines that fail due to the connecting rod failure.
i was replying to accord94dx when he said "every single S2k with a blown engine", he didn't mention anything about engines only with conrod failures, okay?

you don't necessarily have to put in a whole lot of effort to throw a rod- my gf's bone stock civic cx (70-hp) motor tossed a rod one day just doing a lane change not even getting on it at all...
the car ran like a top up till right then that day, then it just let go just like that.
