h22 smoking after rebuild?
yeah i have a h22a4 swapped in my 93 civic, i just had it rebuilt, new piston rings, new rod bearings, new hgasket, changed all 4 pistons with used ones...anyways i had it rebuilt because it was knockin and eveyone told me it was pistons at the wrist pin, i had it rebuilt and the knockin was still there so i was like WTF??? so the other day i decided to hook a vaccum line to my egr valve(didnt have a vaccum on it when i bough the car) and the noise went away. so now i figured out that my egr valve was the problem all along and that i wasted my money on a rebuild and the worst thing now is that now my car smokes pretty bad?? i have no idea what its from, it doesnt seem to be burning any oil nor mixing with coolant or anything but the oil seems to smell like fuel a lil bit? the smoke it like a white/grayish color and it always smoke, it doesnt get better or worst as it warms up or i drive. so my question is does anyone have any idea of what it can be....could it be my egr valve or is it because its breakin in?? any help would be appriciated
thnks

Ok no need to hate because he reused the old pistons,He didnt ask for you to come in and make a lame comment. Back to your question, yes reusing the old pistons isnt as great as buying new and having the block bored, but its not all bad though. Im pretty sure the engine is probably burning a little oil at this point since the rings havent really had time to seat properly. Give it a couple hundred miles but be sure to check your oil often to see how much you might be buring .
Ususally after a rebuild using the same pistons the engine will burn oil its pretty common actually. the pistons do not wear round perfectly in the bore so when putting new rings in the rings are perfecly round so there is going to be oil blowby the rings. That would explain most of your smoking problem if you are absolutely sure your head gasket is fine.
Correct me if im wrong guys but im glad to help

ring gap?
piston to wall clearance?
block rehoned?
rings clocked upon install?
compression test?
leak down %?
miles on engine?
type of oil?
a bad egr can cause detonation, not engine knock.
sounds like to me that you took a "mechanics" word for it.

thanks H23VTECBB1, that really helped me

as for the egr valve not knockin, it does, read about egr valves when they go bad one of the symtoms is "pinging or knockin".....anyways i just orderd a egr block of plate....
anyways thnks everyone
(specially H23VTECBB1

I am not the one from Haterstown dude. I was only stating the truth. Why would anyone use that many new parts and then reuse the old pistons? Would you? From the sound of the OP, he sounds like he used pistons from a different block alltogether definately FTL!!!!

if they are still within the service limit, you dont need new pistons and replacing the rings will suffice as long as they are gapped properly and clocked.
Yes this is true, but what if he has A size or B size? What if he has a block that has A and B cylinder bores? Maybe he needs to be sure what he has.
the problem was that i took the mechanics word wen they told me my engine was knockin because one of my wrist pis was bad so i got all the pistons changes, and i now i figured out that it was my egr valve....
anyways thanks everyone
