Default Car accident question

Okay so this is what happened. Some guy at about 5 am in the mourning decided to run into my roomate's altima (parked on the street) pushing it about 30 ft into my car. He then proceeded to back up and speed away but not before nailing my neighbors mustang. The police were called and they found his truck abandoned on some street. The police finally found the guy after about a 2 weeks. I'd also like to add the Long beach police department is horrible. All they did was send a notice to the registered owner and we were lucky the guy replied. But anyways we got the guys insurance info. and of course he the minimum required by california, which is $5000. The damage to the 3 cars he hit totaled to around 25,000 (my roomate's 6 month's old altima was salvaged) So my fix my honda it was about 3600. This came out of my own pocket because i only had liability insurance. Now about 10 month's later the insurance company finally finished the claim. They told me i get about 700 but if i accept the check I can't go after the guy for anything else. I was thinking about doing the small claims court thing but not sure if it'd be worth my time or if i should just take the insurance check?

Your own insurance company should have UNINSURED motorist coverage. Your insurance should have covered your damage, then go after the other guy's insurance to cover it for themselves. Something similar happened to my ex, and that is what happened.

In Illinois it is required that everybody carry uninsured / underinsured coverage. Do you have that? If so your own insurance will cover it though I think you have to come up with the deductible. And ask your agent about whether or not to cash the check.

Was it a nice truck? Do you think that the guy has money? If so you may be better off going the small claims route rather than cashing the check.
