Default Tips for checking bearing clearances?

Hi All:

When checking main bearing clearances with plastigage, do you have a trick to getting the main cap back off without smearing the plastigage?

It seems particularly difficult on the D series engines where you don't have individual caps. The main caps are one giant girdle/cap assembly.

Thanks,
Sonny

I used a dead blow hammer and a 2x4 to slowly back the main girdle off of the block when building my D16Y8.

It's kinda tough I know...
