Default hooking up a switch to run engine fan?

Alright i'm trying to hook up an auxiliary switch so i can turn my ac fan on and off whenever i want, being that i no longer have ac, however that damn thing isn't working.

I have one wire from the switch running to the fan, one wire to a ground, and another is spliced into my tailight fuse, the switch illuminates showing its loaded but the fan wont spin, also the other wire on the fan is grounded as well. It says for the fan that is needs a 12v power supply...

Do i need to hook up a powersupply in bettween the switch and fan? if so how? or is the fuse i jacked into my power supply? someone let me know cause me headers are getting hot as hell.

tailight fuse? are you serious? find a switched 12v accessory and splice into that fused line, if you are serious w/ this post.....anyway, upgrade the fuse +10 amps, maybe test the fan by running some test leads to the battery before you do all this...

wait wait my fault, i originally had it jacked into a fuse but i forgot that i had spliced it into the wire for my cigarette lighter, the switch instructions stated that i should have no more that 20 amps, thats exactly what i have. Now how do i see if the fan even works in the first place?

figure out which wires on the fan are + and - (REMEMBER, THE POLARITY OF THE FAN'S POWER HOOKUP WILL DETERMINE WHICH WAY IT WILL SPIN), and hook them up directly to the battery for a second to see if the fan indeed werks, then if it does, find an appropriate switched 12V source, like the cig lighter, upgrade the fuse + 10 amps, and run the switch inline of the + wire...

Hook fan directly to battery to make sure it works first.

Run the ground wire to the chassis.

Run the power wire from the fan to the interior of the car. Run another wire from the switch inside the car to the battery. Inline fuses are optional. Use at LEAST 16AWG wire.

This way you can turn the fan off or on regardless of if the car is on or not (good for cooling down between drag races, etc)

Just remember to turn the fan off. You could add a relay if desired, but I have no clue on how to do that.

easiet way

1. switch from radio shack
2. 30 am rely
3. 14 and 18 guage wire 14 for the relay and 18 for the switch wiring)

OK here goes

I did this to my fog lights a fan can work just as easily

1. take and hook the relay to the + wire going straight to the fan and the other end of the relay goes to +12 (I used the main fuse box and tapped +12 straight from the battery) you may wish to tap into the fan fuse to protect your fan/car from too much current. I did not have to do this since there was a 15 amp fuse inline with fog light power

2. run one of the wires for the switch through the firewall using the grommet on the driver's side (it is easier) and attache it directly to the switch the other wire goes from a SWITCHED 12 V supply inside the car to the switch the other end of the wire from the engine comaprtment goes to the energize post on the relay

3. place the switch in your car

a. you can use the empty switch cover next to the cruise control

or

b. if you have a sunroof use the empty spot in the console accross the emergency flashers.

turn car on, test

edit I wish I could spell
