i was wondering what type of tranny fluid a 99 civic si would have. i need to refill as some spilled when i put my engine & trans back in.

you're supposed to run Honda MTF, but from what I understand 5w-30 is okay to use as well, you'll hear different. I've been using 5w-30 full synthetic for years now.

 

oh, and I'm assuming you mean a manual tranny, right?

no no no no no!!!! you are NEVER supposed to put synthetic oil in a honda transmission. It doesnt allow for the gear synchros to be dry when you shift which is how honda transmissions are engineered to work. use honda MTF with the white caps and never look back.

 

well there you go, i couldn't think of a reason why not to use it, but i guess that makes sense, thanks for correcting me. OP: lets go buy some Honda MTF haha

 

you can also use some cheap oil, try finding the cheapest oil and you can use it, don't use anything that is fully synthetic, not good but i'll go with honda mtf, it's only about $6 a gallon.

How many years/miles experience do you have with using synthetic oil in your manual tranny Sleeper?

I have 200K miles and 13 years of experience with Mobil 1 in the manual transmissions of my two VX's and it works fantastic. Maybe you don't drive in subzero weather like I do, but assuming you do, you would notice the difference between your coveted HONDA mtf and synthetic.

If you don't know whether or not something works, you shouldn't be dissuading others from trying it.
