Default distributor timing question

I did some searching but the answers i was looking for seemed inconclusive.

When I first did my swap 3.5 years ago everything went awesome. i set the timing on the dizzy and it lined up perfect; got 28 MPG in town and everything.

well that distributor blew a bearing back in 2006 and i got a new one off of csk's website, put it on but didn't have a timing light.

well now i finally get one (yeah almost two years later lol) and i turn the distributor clockwise all the way and it just barrrrely won't line up. It needs to retard (i think) just a bit more.

I messed up my hand last night so i can't tear everything down for a few days to check cam and crank timing, but i don't think thats off. Is the only other solution a bad distributor???

well, it depends on if you jumped the timing harness or not. If you didn't, then what you are seeing is not base timing at all. depending on what you swapped in, the way to jump the timing harness varies.. so search for your swap and look for that info.

if you DID have the harness jumped and you can't get the timing set, then something might be off.

Yes, if you did jump it, then it sounds like you might be off a tooth.

not to be a thread necromancer or anything but i'm pulling better mileage with my timing off than I was with it set dead on. I am getting 32MPG in town when I used to get only 27-28. Might be onto something here
