Default CRX Starter...

Alright I have this problem where sometimes when I turn the key, the dash lights all come on, I can hear a sort of humming noise, but nothing happens (no cranks or clicks). If I turn the key several times (Sometimes 20 or more, sometimes 1), the car will eventually start right up. I did some snooping around and found that whoever did the swap didn't use the correct size terminal connection for the wire to the starter. I put the correct one on and for about 2 days the car started perfectly every time, I thought I had it fixed. However went to go start it the other day and nothing, there doesn't seem to be any pattern, just pure randomness.

I had talked with a couple of people last summer on Hondatech and they suggested it was the starter itself and that I should try swapping one out. I unfortunately don't have another to swap nor do i know what car to get it from since I have a B16A2 swap.

Alright so here are my questions"

1). Does anyone know what starter (Meaning what car to get it from-1994 Del Sol VTEC by any chance?) I would get for my 1990 CRX Si with a B16A2 swap conv to OBD1? (Also uses the Hydro Trans with Hasport Conv)

2). Anyone have any suggestions on what the starting problem is? Or where to begin troubleshooting?

Thanks

So it sounds like the main relay is working, it clicks and the fuel pump hums right?
do you have a good Battery, how many volts?

bust out a voltmeter and have a freind help you test the voltage going to the starter. if its getting a good signal then i would also guess that its a bad starter.

I had a starter go out on me and it didnt make the typical clicking noises, and I was soo convinced that it couldnt be the starter, but it was.
I went through a few bosch starters until I got the denso starter from the dealer and that has lasted me a few years now.

and i'm not positive on what model to get the starter from, but its should be any vehicle that has a B16 with a hydro tranny

yeah I beleive that should work

Oh yeah and have a friend tap on the starter while you crank it next time it happens.

I don't get any clicks when I turn the key, just a hum and dash lights (No attempts at cranking at all). I was just reading in another post where the guy said the starter had bad terminals and that there was a kit to fix them. When i went to start my CRX for the 1st time this year I couldn't get to do anything but dash lights, after messing with the starter wire the car started, so I bet the terminals on the starter are the problem.

But does the main relay "click" when you turn the ignition to the on position?

If not you need to repair it or buy a new main relay
