Rpm Gauge fluttering!
Ok, last night i was driving home from work and i noticed that my stock rpm gauge was fluttering or jumping up and down, even though i was constantly in the same position with the throttle. when i accelerated, it was fluttering back and forth even more!
i have also noticed that on my vafc, it was popping a warning light which i never seen before though i remember reading the manual that it would give off a red light if something was off in the engine. but when i check the vafc rpms, they remain normal but my stock indash rpm gauge is flying all over the place
i also notice when the red light flashes on, you can feel the motor jerk for a bit, like for not even a second, but its a really quick jerk, not harsh jerk where it throws me in and out of my seat, but just enough to feel like something is not right
was able to catch some footage of the gauge triping out, i will post a bit later when i return home.
the car currently has a na b16 with simple bolt ons, any ideas as to what might be causing this? it cant be the dizzy since i just replaced it with a new one about 8 months ago and also corrected the timing at the same time.

sorry to jump on this thread but I have the same problem. Along with the rpm's jumping around, after the car has been driven for 20 or so miles it will loose all power and buck and jump and be impossible to drive. Could this also be caused by the ignitor, or is the distributor shot? I hate to buy a new dizzy if it is not needed but don't know how to check this. By the way the engine is a JDM b16a, obdo.

It's the ignitor.
Why replace the entire distributor when an ignitor will solve the problem for less than half the cost?

whats up guyz, sorry, i was out the whole weekend
, anyhow, the ignitor is in the the dyzzy right? sorry i havent posted a video yet, dont know if you guys really need it but i will try to post it sometime tonight. i had also checked the motor over the weekend, i noticed i had a little leak coming off the upper hose for the coolant and i do see that some coolant has gotten on the dizzy. its not an all out burst the is constantly leaking, but more of a tiny slow leak. i will have to replace that of course.
as for all the other peeps that have the same problem, its cool, i have noticed that the first drive of the day (morning) it doesnt do anything until after just about 20 mins of constanty driving on the freeway with a consistant speed of 75mph.

there is the video showing whats up with the gauge as i am cruzing at highway speeds. you can clearly see, im holding a constant rpm, but gauge is all over the place, and when i accel, you can clearly see that the gauge gets more crazy! also when i let off the gas, it still does the same thing
any help?

yesterday we took apart the dizzy, seems that the upper rad hose that was leaking just a tad bit got coolant all up in the dizzy! 4 screws broke lose inside the dizzy! the 1 screw that holds the rotor dug out chunks of the inner cover to point where it lodged it self stuck! 2 other screws were stuck to the little magnet box while 1 barely hung on (forgot what the magnet box was called) see photo:

cleaned it, air blasted it, bolted dizzy all back up, replace the upper rad hose with a new blue samco, and all worked just fine! motor runs super smooth again. only downer was the tach gauge! the tach runs smooth when im climbing rpms, but when i get around 4.5k, the has a bit of a slight jump to it! thought the motor still runs smooth, only the tach seems to jump in the area.

i also found a tiny notch on the blue wire and shows some strans broken. the wire is connected to the second small plug on the dizzy (see photo above, its the gray plug on the left hand side between the intake and the dizzy...i know its hard to see). i will solder this when i get home and add some heat shrink. any idea as to why my tach is jumping around 4.5k?

It could be that frayed blue wire in the dizzy that plugs up to the dizzy. That is the wire I tapped when I installed my Autometer tach, i think that wire sends the gauge cluster the rpm.
I'm have a more violent, but similar problem.
I have a CTR engine and a EDM cluster. I have the rev limit set at 8800rpm, but before then engine sees the limit, the needle on the tach gets erratic jumping thousands of RPM at a time.
I was thinking that it might have been the Hondata cutting the ignition for the rev limiter, but it still revs another couple hundred RPM before hitting the limiter.

its funny too, i can monitor the rpms on the vafc, it shows a steady climb in numbers while the stock tach is flying all over the place! hope that blue wire solves the problem
ok, so i checked the blue wire, and re soldered it, sealed it with some liquid electrical tape.
no luck....my rpm gauge still has a light jump when i give a bit more gas. the motor runs super smooth though! but my rpm gauge still shows slight fluttering. the dizzy was just rebuilt so i dont think it can be that. i just got the timing done and it was 6degrees off stock so we put it back to stock.
car runs a hell of a lot better but any one know what might be causing the fluttering rpm gauge while accelerating? its not as bad though compared to before the dizzy was rebuilt.
also, i have noticed that on the vafc, i can be idling at a light, and i notice the throttle percentage will automaticly move back and forth from 2.0% to 1.5% then back to 0% just randomly at times????? rpms drop just slightly...im not sure what that can be from, i mean im not even holding the throttle but then again, the rpms drop while the throttle % goes up to that 2.0%? i would figure it would rev bit higher! think my tps can be going bad??? anyone???

okay, ill check it once pop it off again. so even though the motor runs completely smooth, during accel and deccel, just the gauge is flopping a bit, this is the ignitor? just making this 100% sure. thanks guys!
also, when was the last time you changed your spark plugs? misfiring under load can also be caused by bad plugs.
but the jumpy tach is usually an ignitor problem (happened to me twice).

Yeah Ive been threw a ton of ignitors. They go like light bulbs it seems like. I have changed the whole thing twice too. Thank god for the lifetime warranty on my ignitor. I just keep an extra one in the back with the tools to change it out whenever my teg leaves me on the side of the road
Bing bank Im back. I have also noticed that they dont all have the same death meaning they dont always make your car sputter and sometimes there is a little or a lot... and some times they will hang in there for a year after they start to bug out or sometimes they go down fast. I had one that would die and not allow me to start for 5 minutes then it would fire up and drive fine for a couple days and do it again. In every instance its been the ignitor going bad. Over and over and over x2 again..... Its dying the same way as describe above currently but Im ready.

Had the same prob just earlier. I was decking it in the highway and it would jump around like its hitting redline or something. So I stopped and tried to redline at idle but it bouncing at 4k rpms. So went junkyard bought dizzy and it fixed it
