Default 89 civic hatch - starting issues

OK so firstly, i'm new here, and hope to start off good.

my problem is this: my girlfriend (her name on here's like kitteekate or something like that) has an 89 civic hatch automatic with the dpfi and a 1.5l. it's having starting issues, mainly when the car's warmed up, although once a few months ago when it was coldish.

pretty much the problem is this: it will crank and crank and crank untill the battery's dead, but wont start. it happened like 5 mins ago (i'm at home, she's out and about), last night after driving from 88th and foster to gresham, and earlyer this week. i looked it up, and found three or four main things: it's not getting fuel, there's air in the fuel lines, it's not sparking, or there's a problem with the fuel pump relay. more specificaly (as according to this thread: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=2265336) is that the cap/rotar could be worn out.

we recently had the water pump replaced, and they guy didn't know/just didn't replace the valve cover, so all four spark plug tubes (or w/e they're called) have oil in them, i DID replace the gasket with new cover bolt gaskets, plug tube gaskets, and cover gasket. it has also recently gotten a new radiator and thermostat (oem honda of course). also, as best i could at four in the morning got enough of the oil out to make it so it's lower than the plug tips, but i still think it's a problem...

she just tried to start it up, and i told her to smell for gas in the exhaust, and she said she didn't smell any, is that bad?

thanks! i know little about hondas, i'm a ford guy (i drive an aerostar aka mini van).

oh why would my van (with a 875 cca batter PLUS a 200+farad battery) make it so her car starts quick like a normal honda vs. w her battery it cranks for a while before it starts. wierd?

thanks again in advance!

Edit: removed the oil from sparkplug tubes, it started RIGHT up. guess it was having grounding out problems. perhaps her mpg will go up now too. good news is the plugs didn't look fowled up at all. not bad for supposed 256,xxx miles
