I need a little help with deciphering all the shock/strut choices?

Default I need a little help with deciphering all the shock/strut choices?

I have a 98 Civic HX coupe. It's my 2nd car, but I drive it most of the time because I drive so much for work. I bought it because of gas mileage (40+ mpg) and it's coming through for me like a champ. We'll, it's got about 100,000 miles on it now and the original OEM shocks are starting to get a bit soft.

I'm wanting to get new shocks. I'd like to get a bit better than stock. However, I don't need a 'race' setup. I just have stock tire and wheels. So, I'd like to get the BEST shock I can for my money for this car. I'm okay with it handling a bit better, but again I won't be racing or pushing my Civic for high performance. Also, I want a firm but comfortable ride.

All the choices I hear are Tokico HP's (blues) and KYB GR2's. How about the base model Bilsteins which go for about $250? Of these which is the better value in your opinion and which would be best suited for my needs?

The Blues and the GR-2s are basically stock replacements. There are adjustable shocks like the Tokico Illuminas, KYB AGX, and Koni Yellows that are available to you. Are you considering putting some lowering springs on since you are replacing the shocks anyways? You should, it'll make the car look better!

The biggest hesitation about putting lowering springs on is I don't want to have to modify my driving to go 'super slow' over speedbumps or up driveways. My impression and it may be wrong is that you HAVE TO do that. If I'm incorrect in my impression (about modifying my driving because of lowering) please let me know.

I ran the Tockico D specs with Tein S techs on my 97HX. It provided a nice a nice ride with the ability to adjust for track and mountain runs.. It does cost a bit more but I always felt you get what you pay for. Good Luck!

you would be fine with springs that lower the car an inch or so. you wont really have to modify your driving style. you would slow down for huge bumps i would hope anyways.

it really depend on how much you want to spend. I am thinking about getting some new struts as well...i am currently using Eibach Pro-Kit for spring, the ride is smooth, and it not too low. these are the things i found...

springs (Eibach) - $200 - about 3 years ago, so i dont know the current prices for it.
koni yellows - $450 shipped from H-T Vender.

so that make it $650...that will be a Spring/Strut Combo. you can pay about $200 more and you can get a complete Coilover system. (Tien Basic or other brands) another option if you do not want a coilover system is Ground Control/Strut combination. this way you will still have your height adjustment as well. Good Luck
