did you grind any gears at all just before you realized it was stuck? and how do you not know if you're not in third or fourth gear..? your tranny might be busted =\

I had a similar problem on my 97 GSR, only not as severe as yours seems to be. What happened was that I was in 4th gear on an on-ramp I dropped down to 3rd to speed up some and decided to stretch out 3rd gear a bit, when I went to shift to 4th the tranny would NOT go into gear, when I was finally abel to get it into 4th it didn't want to come out. What happened was was the metal part that holds the dampening spring in place had broken and the spring was bouncing around inside the housing. I don't know exactly why that caused it to get stuck in 4th gear but all I did was get a new clutch and its all working fine now.

this is the spring I'm talking about... (LARGE pic warning) This is not the same clutch that went bad. http://home.comcast.net/~quest16182/clutch-2.jpg

im no expert so sorry for the shitty explanation, basically what im trying to say is that it is possible your problem is a minor one (compared to having to get a new tranny anyways).

Your tranny is not "DONE", you will however have to pull it and take it to a shop or do the work yourself..... more than likely its a 3/4 Slider (assembly with syncro's is $180) that is screwed or the corresponding shift fork for that slider assy, really not that bad or "DONE" IMO.

I have a gearset right now that is stuck in 3rd gear and it is just the slider assembly also, otherwise the gearset is perfect.
