What is the vtec pressure switch?
Well Im running a stock JDM gsr motor odb2 in a 97 ek civic hatch with a usdm p72 ecu. I noticed the jdm motors dont have a oil pressure switch but just the solenoid. I dont have a oil pressure switch for now but I did wired the vtec solenoid straight to the ecu and vtec kicks in. I know the usdm ecus have to be wired to the vtec oiil pressure switch but not the jdm ecu. Is the vtec oil pressure switch important? what does it do? Do I need it and if so can I use a usdm b16

The VTEC pressure switch allows VTEC work when there's oil pressure, since oil is very important for VTEC engagement. Basically it's a safeguard for us. However, it's not really needed.

So I dont really need it? what is the safeguard? how does it protect it? I just want to be on the safe side.

It's a safeguard so if you have less oil than needed to activate the switch, you won't be kicking VTEC and depriving other engine components of oil. All JDM engines don't have this pressure switch.
