Hello HT Members,

I’m in the need of some good technical advice on how to approach a small area of rust that is found on my left corner panel; in front of my rear tire. I just also had seen another spot on my driver’s side lower door jam. I just want to make it clear that I’m not in any hurry to get the areas professional repair because I would like to get the whole car repainted at some point in the future. In saying this I would like to approach the rust locations by controlling the spreading and penetration. I'm looking for recommendations on how to successfully do this. I wasn’t sure if it looks like surface rust or not. I did go to my local NAPA store and purchase their rust treatment in a spray can; but I hold restrain in using the product until I hear otherwise. The item is #765-1671. I have no body repair experience at all, but I would love to learn a few tricks.

hmmm personally since ur sanding it down, i ahve some experience with body work but not too much, so someoen can correct me,

since ur gona get it repainted so this wont matter so much

sand down to metal around rust area about 1ich around, if it is straight through, weld a peice metal to it

if it is surface rust, grind all rust spots off, and try see if u can grind from back make sure its all gone, or its gonna come back, then put some bondo and putty on top of it and get some cheap red paint and paint it till its rdy for body work, or jsut primer the spot,

this is just basic steps, but ask around for a detail step

thsi jsut let u know wats up with rust and rust is like cancer,it spreads, treat it earlier the better good luck my friend, i love honda but that only thign i hate about it lol

 

I'm very surprised on how little feedback I got. I guess not to many people use the paint and body section; too worried about hp and no looks...

I will probably apply the NAPA rust treatmentm howeverI haven't heard the comments on this product.

 

at the shop we sand as much of the rust away and apply a product called rustmort. Then we neutralize it with water.

 

ya sand as much as u can, becuase rust is like cancer it will spread, so sand most of it al without going through ur metal then apply that stuff any rust area u seee, KILL IT

 

For the spt on your door jamb I would take a wire wheel on a die grinder, and clean it all up about 1 - 2 inches around where the rust is/was. Don't grin it as this will only further weaken already weakened metal. Then coat it with an epoxy primer, not a spray bomb. Don't putty it right now.

As for the other spot, it looks like there was wither rust from the backside, or a paint delamination moisture related issue that caused this. I would take the wire wheel to this too, hopefully it won't break thru the metal in any area. If it does break thru then you are going to want to cut the metal out at least an inch if not more past the affected area and well in a patch panel. But before you weld in the new piece take a mirror and make sure there is no more rust on the back side.

Oh and most of the rust treatment products on the market use some for of muriatic acid to "convert" the rust. And most brands use very similar concentrations of it.

 

i searched "rust" in topic titles, recent as opposed to archived, in this forum alone and i got like 50 hits; that is 50 threads with 'rust' in the title in the P&B section.

i looked through just a few of them and they offer MORE than enough info on what you are looking for...

 

Hello HT.

Lately it has been so nice out that I decided to start working on the rust spot. So far I worked the area with a wire wheel and sanded it with 100 by hand. After this I then sprayed it with the NAPA rust treatment. I was wondering what may be the next few proper steps? Areas doesn't seem to be smooth. I need to get some primer and paint on this area before it starts to oxidize. Darn fender well lip is starting...uhhhh thanks.

 

if you give 1/2 a **** about your car, the rusted area needs to be cut out and new sheet metal bonded or welded into place. The rear would need to be totally cleaned and sprayed with something like a epoxy primer. The outside would need to be totally cleaned and sprayed with a primer as well (i reccomend epoxy). Followed by some body filler, sprayed with primer surfacer. Then painted.
At least thats what I would do, but what do I know?

I think you will need something much better than NAPA rust treatment to truly stop your rust.

Yea I'm looking for a temp. fix until until my build is done. It may be like this for 2 yrs or so before I get the car completely painted. I just want to find a method to stop stop the rust from spreading and making it look better. As you can see the NAPA spray really didn't even coat well. I'm interested in trying Por15 hoever after looking online they make a lot products. Not sure what I'm after... thx

 

lol be careful with por15, it takes like a week to get out of your system if it absorbs into your skin.
