well my car smoked really bad before when it would sit at idle for a short period of time(10-15 seconds) before it would start smoking. so i got new pistons and rods and a fresh bore, and it is still doing the samething.... because the feed back i got before was it was the oil rings on the pistons were bad. so now what should i look at on the setup? i was thinking of rebuilding the turbo next to see if that clears the problem? let me know if you need more info on the setup. thank you.

mine was doing the same thing on a fresh build with a stock head and it was my valve seals.

 

yea im trying to decide weather to rebuild the turbo first or rebuild the head first.

 

what are your duty cycles for the injectors at idle...just wondering if they're spraying too much fuel into your cylinders which would wash oil off the cylinder walls and cause smoking at idle?

 

i had the same problem, rebuilt my short block still did it, rebuilt my head still did it, in the end it was my pos turbonetics turbo

 

I had the same problem, I ran with a thicker oil and the smoke went away.

I have the same problem as you on my setup and both of ours are very similar.I had help with mine and came up with the valve seals being the problem but you could see oil on the tops of the pistons on mine.

 

how did you conclude it was the valve seals and not the oil rings on the pistons?

 

Have you done a compression test? Because I have the exact same issue with my turbo LS-V set up. My compression numbers are still in reasonable range, but I do see oil on top of my pistons. Some people told me its the valve seals, others say it sounds like the rings. Weird thing is that the motor has less than 3K miles on it from a fresh rebuild. I hope its neither and that thicker oil will solve my smoking issue.

have u tried using thicker oil yet like the guy above said? I'll try some 15W50 and hope the smoking decreases.. ive been using my 10W30 since breaking in my motor, so it may be time for a change.

 

I use 20/50 for oil and great. I change my oil back then with royal p smoke all over.

Well my problem isnt resolved yet but I also thought it might have been the rings but I have been told by quite a few of the better motor guys that it is the seals.My case is a bit different than yours because ther is oil on top of the pistons.

I would never use thicker oil to solve my problem since thats a bandaid and not a solution.There is a reason why its doing it dont just cover it up by using thicker oil.

 

hmm, i have the same problem. i had my turbo rebuilt (turbonetics) and it still smokes. then i tried the thicker oil solution. i went from 5w30 to 10w40 and it still smokes. boosts like crazy though. i'm also getting oil residue out my exhaust. i think it just might be the turbo, bad seals?

 

when you have the turbo rebuilt, they put new seals in.

hey guys did you ever look inside the intake manifold....i used to see some oil in my intake manifold on my fresh turbo,fresh built engine and it all came from the old aged black box behind the block (crankcase breather)....what i did i used a Z10 plug and did a filtered catchcan setup and intake stayed clean after then....in conclusion my pistons stayed clean too! am not saying thats the problem you guys are having, but its a good place to start looking at

yeah, you probably had a lot of blowby entering the intake manifold, thats why i vent mine too just like you do
