Interested in building a high reving 99-00 Si
Hello this is my first post. my name is steve i run roadsterstyle.com a small forum for MX-5s and S2000. i have an 07 MX5 GT, and my dad has a 05 S2k.
I always liked the 99-00 Si, i wanted one but i ended up buying an 95 Talon TSi, then a 03 Evo, then an 05 Spec-V, and now a 07 MX-5. i have seen the Sis for as low as $5k so i was thinking about picking one up. i never had a really high reving car and would like to get that Vtec power band.
so i have a few questions, What would it take to get the car to rev up past 8k? i think it would be awesome to have a 10,000 Redline. i thought someone once told me the stock springs are rated at around 9,500 so i just wanted to know what it would take to pull it off. and when looking for a Si is their anything i should look out for? the cars purpose would mostly be a Winter DD and some autoX (i dont want to go crazy with mods on the mx5 just yet)

you can rev it high but it will run outta power around 8200. youll need some big cams to make power all the way to 10k, as well as all the supporting mods.
so all it needs would be a big cam? what are supporting mods? (I,H,E) or are you talking about valves and springs and timing gears?
i would like it to be able to rev up safely.

In order to make power up to 10,000 RPM you need to have a big cam, I'd go stage 3. BC IV, JUN3, etc. Valves, valve springs, retainers, cam gears, high comp pistons, rods, a good intake, header, exhaust, injectors, fuel pump, and oil pump will get you to where you want to be.

Save your money. That chassis isn't the lightest; that motor doesn't create adequate torque; and you're going to spend a ton of money building a high-revving B16 to have 200 WHP.

Totally not worth it dude. What is your goal in building a 10,000 RPM motor? The B16 motors (A,B) feels just like a 1.6 D-series before change in valve lift.

You'll need a lot more than that. A highlift cam, usually anything after stage 2 needs aftermarket valve train parts. You'll end up investing atleast twice as much as it would take to make the same amount of power vs the forced induction route or a motor swap. And I personally would chuckle inside at someone who would spend that much money to make that much power.

before you start shopping for parts or anything else, sit down and compare the B16 to a few large displacement sport bike motors. these motors are made to rev super high and still make power. for instance many have ITBs, small piston skirt area, and they're tuned properly for this kind of high rev operation.
you're going to need a bit more than a list of parts that need swaping out. you need it purpose built for high rpm power. one thought would be a custom regrind that gives you usable low rpm power since it'll be a dailly driver, and extend the powerband into the high revs with VTEC (the original purpose for VTEC...)
another suggestion is to start arranging some numbers in a spreadsheet as you find prices and labor costs (including your own... what's your time worth?) this is a good way to see if a wild and crazy idea is worth it. hey, if it is and you follow through, you may make the cover of a magazine...!

no i dont want to go crazy. i was under the impression that it was a common thing to have b16s that rev that high. how high are people getting them with minor modifications? it was just a thought, to me 8k would still be a high reving engine.
