Default can i put the wheels back on with no tranny?

ok, heres the deal, i wanna do my own clutch job and replace my Input shaft bearing seal. trouble is , i live in an aparment complex in CA that does not allow car to be jacked up overnight. so....i think i can take out the tranny in half a day, but i dont wanna rush the tranny seal change, hence it will be an overnight job.

So...can i simply reinstall the LCA and knuckle, tie up the driveshafts somewhere and reinstall the wheels? any risk of damaging suspension or driveshafts if the driveshafts arent installed into the tranny?

one other thing..does anyone remove the exhaust pipe that runs below the cat/manifold when they drop the tranny? mine's a D16Y7. will it make access to any bolts easier if i remove the exhaust pipe?

As long as your suspension components are back together correctly, it wont matter if there's a transmission or not. You'll be just fine putting the wheels back on without it

Removing the exhaust could only make your job easier, it should only take 10 mins to get off. Then you don't have to worry about it.

It doesn't really get in the way though...so it's useless work. It's like taking off the power steering to change out your spark plugs.

OP: Just put it back together sans axles. Dont let the axles hang there....they will seperate...and then it wont be fun anymore. Put the axles in your trunk. Put the suspension back together. Put the wheels back on. Done.

thanks for the tip...actualy i wasnt gonna take out the axles/ driveshaft, but to just remove the side that connects to the tranny. when you say it will separate...you mean if the axles are connected to the wheel hub but not the tranny...if i put my suspension back together, the weight of the suspension will force out the axles from the wheel hub?? i'm getting confused.

the reason i dont wanna remove my axles completely from the wheel hub (only disconnect from the tranny) is because i dont have an impact wrench and am afraid of having to struggle with the removal and reinstall)

No. The axles hanging there will seperate because of gravity. Axles weigh a considerable amount. They seperate very easily. If they're just hanging out in the suspension, they will droop somehow and seperate.

You dont need an impact. Get a breaker bar...or use your jack handle for leverage on your 1/2'' ratchet...or another big bar. Undo the staking on the axle nut using a screwdriver and hammer.

Either take the bolt off on the ground...or put a screwdriver between the rotor vanes and your caliper. Your wheel wont be able to turn and the nut will come off. You do not need an impact to reinstall either.

You most likely allready sperated your axles, however. If you left the attatched to the hubs, you most likely had to do some violent maneuvering. Meaning you most likely seperated them. Get ready to invent a WHOLE new genre of swear words.

Does the axle boot have a "sucked in" portion like it's stretched? Cuz if it looks like that....you're done. Swearing will follow.
