Default VAFC Neo VS. CROME (Need Advice)

Posting for a friend.

Set up consist of B16/Stock sleeves. CP 9:1:1 Pistions. T3/T4 Turbonetics Turbo. Ported head/supertech valve springs and retainers. 3Inch downpipe.

Since is such a simple set up... I would think that a VAFC Neo and Crome would be able to dish out the same results since the set up isnt so complicated...... (I dont know much about tuning)

Advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

So he spent $450+ on pistons, $450+ on a turbo, well over $750 for headwork, then another few hundred for the rest - and is cheaping out on the most important part? You can get a basic street tune for less than reselling the used VAFC will get you, why even bother with it?

With the VAFC you can't tune any timing above 1psi. That means its running far more timing in boost than it should, leading to possible detonation, and definately limiting boost.

Simple answer: ABSOLUTELY NOT.

Ive seen plenty cars doing 10PSI on VAFC hack, and they seem to be "quick" and efficient. But like i said since i dont really know about "the key to tuning", im not sure what go with.

Anyone in my area that can tune Crome or anything similar to it... and make good reliable power??? What does soemthing like this usually cost?

Just tune your car with Crome and forget about using the Neo.

I understand were your coming from.... but see thats the only problem... here in El Paso we dont have any shops that offer this kind of tuning. All they Offer Here in "Hell Paso, Texas" is VAFC tuning or S300. We dont have much of a variety for the peeps who want Crome or Uberdata or anything similar. Some people just dont want to buy S300 so the only other alternative here is a VAFC.

Thats why im wondering if there is anyone in the Area that can Help a brotha out!

Well lets compare the two (i will use crome free) because even using this you will still end up with a better tune than any map hack.

crome free....................................free
Information on how to use crome....free at pgmfi.org
burn1 chip burner..........................$85 at moates.net
info on how to use the burn1...........free at moates.net
CROME TOTAL...............................$85 + tune (any tuner can tune crome)

neo..............................................$ 280 on ebay with free shipping
NEO TOTAL...................................$280 + tunning

So what did we learn today??? not only are you going to be getting a better tune but you are also going to spend almost $200 less by using CROME over the neo.

ls vtec turbo, you would think if your friend built that motor he would understand the tuning needs of a turbo motor that he assembled, he should understand the timing needs of a forced induction motor, and if he did he would never think twice about using a vafc, even with some sort of timing magement like msd btm. sounds like u need to do some research.

well since you keep defending it i assume either you or your friend have already made up your mind. the vafc is an inferior way of tuning. simple as that. does it mean you are gonna blow your engine immediately for using it..no. but it does not have the necessary parameters to tune a boosted honda. do what you want but dont come when you are unhappy with the results.

ive seen guys use a vafc for a week, do a leakdown test to see why the motor is running like poo, find out they toasted it, too much timing will destory a motor very fast.

If you have your car tuned on Crome, why buy a hondata and get it retuned later? Why do people think Crome is so inferior?

Crome works if you know how to work around it's major issues.
Especially ignition timing related issues.

Crome vs hondata has been covered tons of times.

Exactly, ive hear of the Chrome issues. Not only that but, i know that an "out of town tuner" will be able to tune for the power im looking for on Hondata!!

+another one for crome in this case. no ignition adjustments even with low comp pistons will worry me and reliability is key, especially on non factory turbo cars

if he has to use the afc, i would recommend some form of ignition retard, msd..etc. how many hp is he aiming for?

I'd look into the AEM F/IC before even chrome.
