Default Using 75w-90 in the tranny?

I'm starting to notice my shifts are getting rough, so it's probably time to change out the tranny fluid since I haven't done it yet.

I have several bottles of Neo Synthetic 75w90 sitting around that I was thinking about using. Will this be okay to use in a 5th gen 5spd tranny?

No. Gear oils are not designed to work with the brass syncros used in Honda trans'. Redline, Amsoil and Honda are all good mtf.

10 w- 30 w is what the helms says.

A motor oil that thick cant be that good of an idea.

10w30 is ok for temporary use, but motor oil doesn't have the additive package required for transmissions. What he has isn't actually '90wt'. Gear oil is rated at a different temp, so the scale is different.

Ah I see. So would Redline MT90 for example be okay to use?

Oh...

I have Royal Purple in my tranny right now. About 2k miles with it as well.

Honda says its fine, the helms says its fine. But I still havent figured out how long it is fine for. Every 3k like regular oil changes?

Redline MTL is what you want.

i personally run honda mtf with no problems. however a heavier weight oil equals more drag which results in loss of hp especially up top and i would imagine it wouldnt rev as quickly do to the extra weight. Kinda the same idea as removing balance shafts or adding lightweight components.

Ive always wanted to try running Mobil 1 syn 10w-30 in my trans but im not sure if it would be a good idea or not. Does the redline MTL have a different additive package desgined for manual transmissions ? What weight is the redline MTL ?

I've read in the oil forums that using synthetic motor oil in the trans is not a good idea. I've never used Redline either, but that seems to be the brand the op prefers. Redline MTL is supposed to be the same viscosity as a 10w-30 motor oil (the viscosity the helms recommends), so there shouldn't be any resistance issues.

I've got the new synthetic Honda MTF in my trans at the moment, and am not really very impressed. My first impression just pouring/feeling it is that it's extremely thin. Considering that Honda is obsessed with mpg ratings, doesn't surprise me that they reduced the mtf viscosity just like they did with the motor oils. Imo, it's good when the trans is cold but so so afterward. People who track their cars have also told me that it doesn't resist heat well. Presumably because the lower viscosity shears too easily. It's only been a few thousand miles since I put the stuff in, so I'll leave it for another 10k or so. Next time, I'd like to try Amsoil or Redline MTF.

Best bet is Amsoil Syncromesh. Avoid engine oil and gear oil unless its needed for an emergency.
