Manual Transmission Fluid

Manual Transmission Fluid
I just recently aquired a 96 Honda Civic EX 5SPD, a honda tech that my dads friends with said to use 10W-40 otherwise the 5th gear doesnt get oil and it burns up, he says the 10W-30 isnt thick enough to reach it... How valid could this be, also whats the benefit to using Synthetic to regular motor oil? Which should I use for a car with 120,000 miles on it? BTW I searched and couldent find anything related to using synthetic vrs regular.

You can use motor oil, in your manual it should recommend the weight. Although, Honda fluid is better. the best you can get is this: http://www.stealth316.com/2-pe...h.htm which is identical to GM synchromesh.

I did a quick search for oil, and it came up with too many posts to put in here. I know I've replied to quite a few oil discussions in the last couple weeks. They're everywhere. Check this forum as well: http://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi

Dude, you have to stop listening to this tech guy you know. Seriously. What do you think came in your tranny when it was new, and has probably been in there for the 120K miles? Or, if you got it done at the dealer, what do you think they used? Honda MTF.
I'm not exactly sure what 'burning up' 5th gear means anyway. How manual trannys work: http://auto.howstuffworks.com/transmission.htm. If the oil wasn't getting to 5th, there are quite a few other gears on the output shaft that would be having problems too.
Don't mean to flame or be a dick, but most people wouldn't recommend something on here if it was going to do damage to your car; but there is some misinformation floating around.

Re: Manual Transmission Fluid (Mlibby)
Pretty much any 30w oil will work with out any problems, but try to stay away from gear oils they are generally too thick and will make your gears grind. Another thing is if your trans feels alittle notchy put in some ATF with the 30w. I use OEM fluid cause its free and always add 3/4 quart of ATF and my trans shifts like butter.

Re: Manual Transmission Fluid (EG1.8cT68)
Hmmm.... how much ATF do you put into MTF...
Say 2 quarts of MTF are needed for the tranny fluid change... how much of it would be ATF?
Would it be like 2 quarts + 3/4 quarts of ATF
Or 1 and 1/4 quarts of MTF and 3/4 of ATF???
I wonder cos I put 1 and 1/4 + 3/4 and it doesn't do the job right... it is really notchy...
When I use only Honda MTF or Shell 10w40 engine oil it shifts fine with no problems...

Honda updated the service manual on the 96-00 civics to say not to use regular motor oil because it doesn't offer the protection needed and that you should use genuine honda mtf. Can't go wrong with the honda mtf. However redline mtl/mt90 is another good choice (been using mt90 for > 40k miles). Also heard good things about the gm synchromesh with friction modifier. The gm w/fm is different from regular synchromesh...

Weird, must have been recently, because both my manual and service manual have a spec for 30wt oil in it. Doens't really matter anyway, I don't see why someone would put that in there, if you can get actual MTF fluid designed for your transmission.
The FM stuff is better, but (correct me if I'm wrong) you have to get that at the GM dealer. I heard there was an FM additive that's available, but I'm not too sure on that.

I use 10-30 Durablend in mine and it works fine. Hasn't developed any more of a grind than it came with (245,000 on it when I got it, 250k now).
Just don't be an idiot with your tranny and it should be nice for a while.

Re: Manual Transmission Fluid (KKVTi)
I usually but aproxx 1.5 quarts Honda MTF and then top off with ATF and have never had a problem. Me and a couple of the guys at Honda do this and it has always worked.

I just drained and refilled my tranny with Pennzoil Synchromesh. I had Honda MTF in there before. Feels better with the Pennzoil in it. It is not Friction Modified, but it does feel better. Next, trying GM Synchromesh Friction Modified. $5 a quart isn't bad at all. GM stuff is $10 a quart.

Re: Manual Transmission Fluid (Mlibby)
Yo, thats a bad thing. Manual Trannies take Manual Transmission FLUID, not motor oil. Theres obviously a problem with the transmission, and yeah, 10W30 will not lubricate right. If with Honda's Manual Transmission FLuid or GM Synchromesh, something is "burning" that needs to be fixed before it makes it worse and damages other parts or something. Just suggesting you go about this like a auto technician, or engineer, rather than someone that can make a bad thing worse and end up possibly paying a lot more to replace a tranny that could have been fixed in the beginning

Welcome to the third post in the thread.
Does anyone know if you can get the friction modified or the FM additive somewhere besides the GM dealer?
