i just swapped in my b16a sir-ll into my EG. it came with a jdm p30 ecu. the intake manifold ditn have an evap purge and map sensor and it is throwing a code cuz my check engine light is on. My vtec doesnt engage at all. what could be wrong? is it true that vtec doesnt engage when check engine light is on?

 

You should find out what code its throwing, it could be a number of things...
Check the speed sensor, thats what was wrong with mine. If the speed sensor is broken or not hooked up right, VTEC will not engage.

 

when i bought my car they cut the plug off where u would stick the paper clips in to check the codes. i tried on using the paper clips on the 2 wires that are they but they dont do anything. checking the codes is out of the question then unless you guys know another way.

 

I had the same exact problem. I had a CEL for the map sensor and I didnt have a map sensor so vtec didnt engage at all. There should be a nipple where a hose would go on your TB. If you go to the junkyard and pick up a map sensor from either a D or B series, you can just connect a hose from the map sensor to that nipple. If everything is hooked up right (all wires) and you have that map sensor, you should get vtec unless there is a CEL for something else. And its not true that if you have a CEL your vtec wont engage because I have a CEL that comes on while driving and my Vtec works fine.

To check CEL's go to https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=2039034 and look at Connector "D" and 4 is the service check signal. Stick a paper clip in that and ground it and you should be able to check your CEL's

sometimes vtec wont ingage if your cel is on. so check your codes and see what it is for. then try to fix the problem and see if it will engage after you fix the problem.

get a plug from the junkyard and hook it up
