Default New build - B18B/Sleeved/Complete Rebuild - Overheating issue

OK, here is the situation:

Completely rebuilt B18B
GE Sleeved/ o-ringed

I started the car for the first time and went good, temp gage went to about 1/2 way, but no radiator fans kicked on, and the head leak coolant slightly.

Second run on the car was yesterday...started it up, temp went to 1/2 way on gage and the upper radiator hose started spitting fluid. The lower hose was ambient temp, and no radiator fans. I pulled the thermostat(brand new) and tested it - it was fine. I then pulled the fan switch, it seemed good as well. Is it possible that the upper hose was just leaking and I need a better clamp? But I cant believe the upper hose would get that hot and the thermostat didn't crack. I think the head gasket and coolant issue are not related, but the coolant did leak out of the head more on run 2 than run 1. Also, the upper radiator hose seemed pretty hard and pressurized, but the cap seemed to be operating ok. I need some advice...thanks
