in ca, i'm guessing you need a carb sticker. in washington you can get a ticket for just having an exhaust. but everyone still has one.

If its just a fix it ticket w/o a ref inspection you got off lucky. Throw a silencer on their, and take it to the local PD station and have a cop write it off as fixed, pay the court fee, like 20-30 bucks. If it is a state ref. ticket you will have to take the car to the state ref station and they will check how many dB the exhaust is. I can't remember but I think CA limit is like 92-95 dB.

The federal limit is 92 dB.
California does not have stricter noise laws (OC maybe, I can't find anything official).

And exhausts do not require CARB stickers. As long as you left the cat stock (less than 11 years old and any non-stock cat is illegal), anything after the cat is legal if it doesn't violate the noise laws.

You don't need a CARB sticker for your exhaust. Here's what the pigs don't want you to know, any modification behind the cat isn't illegal in California. The only thing they can get you on is sound pollution, which i think caps at 95Dbs. or somewhere in the 90's

When I was moving to AZ a CHP stopped me for the same thing. I pointed out that it was not that loud and that it fell under the 95Db limit. I asked if he had a Db tester. He got pissed because he know I had his ***. He gave me a fix it ticket for have to low a sun screen on the windshield and no front plate. I told him that I just put the bumper on and it had no provision for a plate but the plate was in the trunk. He got pissed and just told me to fix the sun screen so I got out and pulled it off, ha ha. As he was going back to his car I pointed out that AZ doesn't even issue front plates so they would just laugh.

In Cali you can dispute a noise ticket if you go to the Referee Center to have it tested. To schedule an appointment call: (800) 622-7733. Tell them you need a noise certification test because you're disputing a ticket for aftermarket exhaust. They'll set you an appointment at your local Center depending on your zipcode. The Referee centers are located at community colleges. The referee will test the vehicle, and if it passes, issue a certificate of compliance. Take that cert. to court with you and they will drop the noise charge. Now the plate is a different story, since 1999, if I remember right, all vehicles registered in Cali must have a front plate. It has to be bolted to the front bumper. They did this because of all the trafic light cameras that cities were planning on installing. Also when you go into court, do give the judge ANY attitude what so ever ! Just because you have proof that your exhaust complys with state noise regs, doesn't mean he has to accept it. Use a lot of "yes your honor" and "no your honor", and you should be fine. You also might get lucky and the officer that issued the ticket might not show up, and then the whole ticket will get thrown out. Good Luck !

According to recent ammendments, (not all states included) anything making more noise than stock is technically illegal and would require to be fixed. Not enough people pay attention to these types of things to vote against them so its our faults

Although our state law is that all aftermarket exhaust are illegal, i only know of one person that has ever gotten a ticket for theres but she drives like a maniac and probably had it in a low gear and 5 grand on the off ramp lol.

can't you just carry a DB meter with you in your car if you know your car isn't above 95db? That way if a cop pulls you over, you can just show him it's under the limit. who knows though, with the way cops are nowdays, they might just cite you for being a smartass.

Na, it wont matter if you hold a db meter in your car, I know because I have a cop friend and i asked him. He says its all up to the cops if they "think" its too loud or not. They dont care if you can prove it at all. So, its if your lucky and you get a cool cop or a bad cop.

out here in ct, some towns will be a bitch about it. having a big n1 or loud muffler is an easy target for the cops to bag you. thats why some people get the $20 cherry bombs from the auto parts store and get it weld on. it looks stock without sacrificing the performance.

I've been pulled for having exhaust that was too loud. Was two weeks after I bought the car and the cop gave me a fix-it ticket for, exhaust, no amber turn signals, and tint being to dark.

Greddy Evo2 was tested at over 100db. I took off the axle-back, scraped the tint off the drivers side window, and took it back and said it was stock. Officer who took a look at it said it looked good, signed the ticket and away I went.
