Default Does 85 CRX HF 5-Speed Have Pilot Bearing?

After removing the 5-speed transmission from my 85 CRX HF I was expecting to see a pilot bearing, but did not...does it have one? Thanks.

I recall taking apart a 3G Civic. And I don't remember a pilot bearing. At least there is no pilot bearing in the sense of a ball bearing pressed into the flywheel. I also don't recall a bushing pressed into the crank. But you may want to call a Honda dealer on this one to see if they actually have one available. However, pilot bearings are not nearly as important for Hondas as for RWD cars. Honda transmissions support the input shaft on both ends with bearings. But in RWD cars, the input shaft and output shaft are in line with each other, joined by a bearing. This does not make for a very robust setup if there is no pilot bearing supporting the input shaft. So RWD transmissions really NEED a pilot bearing.

nope. no pilot bearing. the 84-87 cars rely on the mainshaft bearing to support the weight.. which is why these fail all the time.

Thanks for both of the replies, it helps having some confirmation.

Interesting, especially since the mainshaft bearing has failed in my 85!

Thanks.

Just an FYI, the 84-87 transmissions didn't come from the factory with a pilot bearing, but IIRC you CAN add one. I don't remember the exact specs but I believe the ID/OD/depth dimensions were fairly common, like a 6200 series bearing or something. Just measure the ID, OD, and available depth in the end of the crankshaft, and any decent bearing distributor (like Dixie) should be able to supply you with the right bearing for minimal cost. Make sure to get the version that is SEALED on both sides as the SHIELDED versions still allow contamination to get in. It's the cheapest insurance you'll ever buy.
