Default Got my new Engine but im confused... help needed!

Alright so i picked up my B16A last night and we finally got it out of my brothers golf and inside. I'm very happy with the purchase; however, i'm a little bit confused...

I was trying to pin point how to find out what year the engine was from and also what generation. Aparently there are two different types of valve covers that came from the b16a first gen and the b16a second gen.

Mine has the valve cover design that the second generations have.

Now heres the wierd part.. I was told that the year of the block was written in the circles above the exhaust manifold and there are four.

Please try and help me determine the year of my engine :bigup:cause im confused

thanks guys any guesses are welcome

EDIT: IT ALSO HAD AN OBD2 ECU ON IT....

Looks like a 9/1 on the left. If so it was assembled in 91 and is probably out of a 92

Yes thats a hydro tranny. See the opening on front of the trans with the rubber boot and a metal shifting for sticking out and two bolt holes next to it. Thats how how you tell if its hydro or not.

It's a OBD1 motor. How are you so sure you have a obd2 ecu. What is the code on the ecu (IE: PR3,P30,PTP)

Your motor was made in '91 for the '92 production year, it's all good

<-- Mine too was made in (9|1) (0|6). It's got the P30 ECU and Y21 hydro tranny.

i've heard people say thatyou shouldn't put an engine older than the age of your car itself... whats with that? its going into my 96 EK good choice? also where do you find the tranny code on the transmission?

they say don't do it because it's illegal in all 50 states. now if your state doesn't hvae emmissions tests, well i doubt a cop is going to pull you over and say, "son pop your hood, this is just a routine check to make sure your engine is not older than your car, oh wait, you have a 96 with a 92 b16 in it, i'm takin you in." but nevertheless, if your state does have emmissions tests, you won't pass with an older engine.

If your laws are that bad then a cop will get you for the motor.

You have a JDM OBD1 SiR B16A.

Most parts from a USDM 99-00 Si OBD2b B16A2 will fit, unless you can source out parts for a JDM B16A.

Goodluck

Alot of b series parts are interchangable so you dont have to search for just your motor, but the more in depth you get inside your motor I would play it safe and get parts for your car.

actually, this is incorrect.

from the looks of it, your motor is out of a 92-95 jdm civic. everything on your motor is identical to the 94-95 usdm (b16) del sol. well, not quite everything.
the only difference is the alternator, cam, and i think pistons. with the exception of the alternator you have nothing to worry about.

though the Si motor is a b16, it uses a different A/C compressor and bracket, water pump (the teeth on the gear is different), timing belt. the 94-95 del sol is the one you want to order parts from, it is also obd1, oppose to the 99-00 civic si and the 96-97 del sol.

from the looks of the pictures of my engine that i posted or just assuming its out of a 92-95 civic? I have people telling me its a 1st generation because it says (9/1)... what else can i look for excluding the valve cover design?

Yo man. its from a 1992 JDM civic SIR I. Hydro tranny, OBD1. Valve cover is a terrible indicator of year. they are switched and swapped all the time... best indicator is block stampings. and hell if it runs who cares!

you have a 92 motor, according to the head stampings.
