Default have a few questions... (4th gen prlelude h22a)

ok so yesterday i was driving and all of a sudden i look at my dash and i was overheating and my CEL light was on...
so i immediately pulled over and shut it off.
let it sit for like 5 min. MAX and then turned it back on to get up my hill to my house (luckily i was close to my house..) and the temp was back to normal but my CEL light was still on....got home shut it off and looked to see if i was leaking coolant anywhere or if my radiater fans werent working or something...let it sit for 3 hours or so then turn it on and no CEL light or overheating....and now i havnt got a CEL light since but i have not driven it because im scared to lol.
also i bought a new t-stat this morning that im going to put on once i get some coolant...
probably tomorrow...

anybody know any other reason why it would have just overheated like this?? and throw a CEl code just 2 times?....

---------------------

also i was wondering what this little black box is on the front bumper...

---------------------

also there is this thick gunky stuff right below my distributer on the tranny...
looks like this...

and also here is a pic of where else this stuff is at...

anyone know what this could be?????

thanks...

Best place to start would be to check what code you are throwing. It will most likely tell you what went wrong. The gunk just looks like grease that is running from somewhere, I would say the axle boot like the previous poster said.

Some ideas for ya, first off, that black box on the bumper, do you have a radar/laser detector, or wires where one were?? I think that may be a part of one of those, or a jammer of some type, try to search for wires running from it is my best idea. And the overheating and gunk, I dunno what its doing now, and if your oil and coolant look ok, but possibly a blown head gasket? And pull the code to see what cel is given, that may help ya out with info.

just got from under the car and the cv boot is not ripped anywhere. i looked all around it and felt for any possible rips....nothing...

also the CEL light doesn't come on anymore like i said...it was just those two times.

snobordboi- thanks! that black box was to the old radar detector that was wired into the car by the previous owner!

and if i had a blown head gasket wouldn't that put coolant into the reservoir tank?

What does you oil look like and what does your coolant look like? If your head gasket blew they will start to mix with each other and look exactly like that gunk in the picture.

oil looks pretty dark for just changing it about just a month ago....
coolant...cant really tell until i drain it to replace my t-stat..
but from what i could see the coolant looks the normal blue. (hondas coolant)

is that what you are thinking it might be? a blown head gasket??
would my oil start to get milky if it was that? because it isn't milky at all...

if anybody has ANY input plz help... i don't want to drive it until i figure out whats wrong and i already miss driving it! lol

here is another pic of where a lot of that gunky stuff is...
cant really tell where that is... but it is all over that thing and surrounding it...

i agree on the headgasket thing. it would definitely cause an overheat.

check the coolant expansion tank for that sludge.

and get that axle boot fixed asap or your cvs will die on ya quick. you might not be able to see the tear. flex the boot all over while you check; many times it's a fine split between ribs.

if you do have a headgasket problem, get it fixed quick as the sludge will end up blocking the coolant passages and can cause you to [freak] up seals and warp heads and all sorts of bad ****.

well im planning on not driving it..
and ill go ahead and replace the head gasket.

because im thinking thats the only thing it could be...
it sucks. but i gotta fix it asap.

but as for the cv boot...
i swear i was feeling all around and there is no tear.. i will check again in the morning but im pretty sure the are ok... and the sludge is from a blown head gasket...
but ill double check.

thanks for all yalls help...
anyone know anywhere i can get a semi cheap good head gasket??

Any other input on the sludge stuff?? Before I go ahead and buy a new head gasket I want to be almost sure that's what it is... anything else to look for so I can tell for sure if it is?..
Thanks.
