a reminder re: timing belt covers
use them- they work
tiny rock somehow flew up in cam gears and jumps lots of teeth on the timing belt-lots of piston to valve contact
motor had 20 minutes on it-
happened in qualifying-
note: b16b motor was swapped out to b16a bottom end-
timing cover wouldnt fit on the b16 head because of the deck height dif. in the motors.

that sucks. I've been running w/o the upper timing cover for like 4-5 track events, but luckily no damage. But I'm def. ordering one before the next event. Also, locktite those bolts for the cover!

How do you know it was a rock that caused the belt to jump?

only think i can think of -
there is no grass around the track- only gravel-
tension was still tight and the belt as well.
had to have been a small rock or tire goober

Well, if the motor only had 20 minutes on it, I'd have guessed something else caused it. Occam's Razor and ****. I could totally be wrong though. That sucks either way!

That's what I was going to say as well. Innocent until proven guilty!!
I highly doubt it was a rock, especially on a new motor.

FWIW - there were a ton of rocks flying around that track, so I think it could be a valid theory. I saw several broken windshields and one of the H2 cars even got a rock lodged in his rear caliper somehow and it made the most god-awful noise you have ever heard as it scraped along the rotor. Plus, the paddock was basically just a gravel surface, so even driving around the paddock you were constantly kicking up rocks. Not saying that it definitely caused the failure, but I think it's more plausible than you guys are thinking.

x2 If it were a rock I bet there would be damage to the belt.

rock is the only thing i can think of, as the tensioner was still tight and so was belt-
ill know when i pull off the lower cover- i hope there is a small rock in there- if not its a mystery-

Well if you don't find one, see if the camshafts actually rotate. It took me 20 minutes this one occasion to find out that a cam has seized in the head (bad head to cam clearances). I really hope that a simple stone is the case.
