92 Civic Fuel Smell
My 92 Civic has a strong fuel smell. There are no leaks that I can see. I replaced the charcoal cannister thinking it might help. The car runs lke a top but I cannot figure this smell out. The local mechanics can't figure it either.
Any Ideas?
Thanks

Okay, let us know if the car is totally stock or what mods you have done to it. Mine smelled of fuel with my chipped ecu in it...swapped it out for a stock P28 and that did away of most of it. Guessing I still have a exh leak somewhere.
well i got the same question as nmhuntr but i got a 96' ek coupe but wut i think is last week my muffler broke from the straight pipe (JDM Exahust) so i had to have it re welded and ever scince its been a strong smell idk has a swaped motor but lots of half *** **** the preious owner did im correcting so any other ideas what it is
I had a fuel smell when the AC was on. Found it was a fuel leak from a pinpoint hole in the fuel return line. Previous owner replaced it with some plastic hose that hardened & cracked and was never ment for gasoline
I'd missed it everytime I looked before. Keep checking those lines.

hi i just registered and over in the uk,
ref your fuel smell,i have a eg coupe with de-cat which i think you call charcoal canister, and a buddy club cat back exhaust,as soon as i took the (cat) off the i could smell fuel, this is due to the exhaust not being and to store any pressuer or strong gasses i,e in the (cat),nothing to worry about it normal.
cheers

I was getting the same MPG with the leak. It only takes a little to stink up the car. Do you notice it more when the AC blower is on? Have you looked under your seats? The fuel pump stuff is under there.
I pulled the rear seat and see no leaks. I heard there is a hose that runs from the tank to the engine for the fumes and there is a valve that controls it but you have to remove the gas tank to get to it.
If I have the fresh air vent on I smell it less until I crack a window then it is like it gets sucked right by me. In recirculate I smell it more. You would swear there was a leak inside but I don't see it.

It's under your hood then. Check the same place I had my leak- there is a hose that runs from your throttle body to a brass fitting sticking out of the drivers side firewall. It passes next to the brake master cyl. This is on an 89, but it should be similar.
It is visible in this picture going from left to right.

I was checking the fuel supply lines, but I never even thought of the return line. The air intake for the cabin is only on the drivers side of the hood.... so that's where the smell was coming in when the outside air was on.
If you have MPFI, the return line is on the fuel pressure regulator and should go to a hard line. It's in the same area.
