tune up
my moms got a 07 civic and she says she needs a tune up. im used to cars with a distributor to change plugs wire cap rotor and all that good stuff. so what all do you change out on these motors to do a tune up besides oil change and air filter??
DAMN!!!!!......30k on an 07???!!!!!!!!!! wow, thats alot. maybe its just me but thats alot! well, in my opinion i would go with some new spark plugs (iridium), old spark plugs give bad gas mileage, um, oil and filter change (just like you said in your post) and tranny fluid "if" all those miles are highway miles. you dont have to change the tranny fluid just yet but it wont hurt to do it, its up to you on that one but i would recomend it if the car is driven a crap load. other than that, make sure the coolant fluid is still good and full (it should be and i know you are not that dumb to not check, im just throwing it in there) it would also be wise to bleed the brakes if you know how to do it, that way you get a better pedal feel on the brake. um, tire pressure and so forth, but im sure thats a little much that im adding on here. so you know the rest of what needs to be done
Your spark plugs should last at least 100K. No need to change it at 30K, they're already iridium.
I would change transmission fluid, oil, air and cabin filter.
I would change transmission fluid, oil, air and cabin filter.
at 30k miles the only thing different from a standard check up is that you should do a transmission flush and cabin filter
a standard check up for me every 3k miles is:
1. oil change w/ new filter
2. check brakes
3. check tire pressure
4. rotate tires
5. top off fluids if necessary
if you arent doing any of those, id do those as well.

no need to deviate from factory recommendations with tune up intervals, especially on a pedestrian STOCK honda, despite what anyone in here says. check with your dealer to see what they suggest.

CORRECT!
I am so glad you banned that 'fo shizzle yo' kid. I was getting sick of the "change the spark plugs every oil change" or whatever bs. I can't believe someone so ignorant could claim he is a mechanic. And you are right. Ignorancy is absolutely not a word! Morons.
I have disagreed with things you've said, but it was always on an opinion basis. I don't think I've ever seen you provide someone with incorrect information. You are a good mod, and I hope you keep cleaning H-T up.

and that is 1000% fine, no doubt! i will never claim i'm the 'man' or anything of that nature, because i'm not and i know that, esp around these latest gen cars. there are alot of people in here who have alot more experience modding the latest gen Si, r18, etc however it's still my job to try to keep total misinformation from becoming the 'rule'. so, i appreciate the support, and you are one of the several very active people in this subforum who keep it from crumbling into a big pile. thanks!
ok, back to our regularly scheduled thread....

I am actually more familiar with carbureted engines (learned on several of my brother's 350 camaros), but I know (as you do) that no normal passenger vehicle needs the plugs changed more often than about 100k. If you have a high performance race vehicle (and the money), changing your plugs often may be benificial. But, under normal conditions the plugs in the Si don't need to be changed until 100k, as Honda states.

yeah, i mean, if we were talking about copper plugs in the high compression environment of the Si, then surely the interval would be sooner, but they are iridium and honda knows that the Si will be seeing performance levels near it's max, so it only makes sense to atleast TRY what they say. i mean, they did design the engine and all! haha...

well my mom said that honda is telling her its time for a tune up so she wanted me to do it. she comutes to work i think about 60 miles a day. plus we took it to idaho once we live in california. but she just told me shes thinking about extending the waranty if she does dont the tune ups have to be done by the dealership to not viod the waranty? and does me doing oilchanges on it void it??

that service minder on the dash is perfect for a stock car, so def follow what it says IMO.
doing your own oil changes and service won't void the factory basic warranties at all, so feel free to handle it all personally or at a private shop w/o going to the dealership. i am not aware of any type of special terms of the EXTENDED warranties that force dealership service; without double-checking, i'd say that sounds illegal. but, re: service under the factory warranty, just make sure the items you use are within the spec of the OE stuff, especially when the vehicle is stock. with some items, i feel it's beneficial to use the actual OE items when doing scheduled service, such as spark plugs and coolant, if it's an automatic, the Honda ATF, etc, etc.

no its not the service minder i guess there calling her from the dealership or sending letters. and i always use honda fluids and stuff like that i usually get ngk plugs though.

i read that post and i saw the the op was the one that changes them every oil change. the fo shizzle guy was saying that he changes his own every 15 to 20k. just wanted to clear that up and keep tension from building

Here is my guess for that, because my mom gets these reminders all of the time. I think the dealership estimates how long it will take your moms car to get to the service intervals, and then sends you a reminder when they think service is coming up. There is no way they could know the car is ready for service until they have a gps in the thing or something.
Unless the letters they send you are recall bulletins, then follow the service minder in the dashboard. The major service intervals can also be found in the manual, if you wanted to see what they are.

ok so I havea much older car with close to 200k on it. I have noticed it jerk at about 2k rpm every once in a while. My dad told me that the engine might be "missing". He told me a tune up - changing the plugs, wires, cap, rotor - might solve the problem, but he is not as knowledgeable with the newer cars with fuel injection. Would a tune up possibly solve this problem? Thanks for any input?
yes, he is 100% correct. fuel filter, valve clearance adjustment, spark plugs, cap, rotor, possibly coil/ignitor. all standard service items for 4th, 5th and 6th generation civics applys to you, if your 200k car is an older honda.
and, unfortunately, this is the wrong forum for a car with 200k, unless you are a professional trucker...that drives a 06+ Civic for work.
