To shim a typical pump, you remove the threaded plug that has the pressure bypass spring. You then put in a shim or washer, usually about 1mm thick, between the spring and the plug and screw it back together. This raises the pressue on the spring, thus allowing more oil pressure to build.
Do you need to do this? I don't think so. For one, more oil pressure = less horse power. You only need about 8-10psi per 1000rpms, and that generally tops out at 60-80psi. Anything more than that provides no benefit. My stock D16 pump provides 80psi above 3000 rpms.
