Default heat wrap

search came up empty. for those of you who have chosen this route, using a 1" wide wrap and like a 1/4-1/2 overlap, how much exhaust wrap in feet did it take to wrap the whole entire header. i am thinking about getting an ebay header and wrapping it.

Make sure you know what materials won't corrode. If your going to wrap your header I believe a stainless steel header or ceramic are the only choices. That and wrapping your header reduces its ability to dissipate its heat making it hotter. I've also heard that there is issues with heat wrap trapping moisture causing premature corrosion. There's a lot of mixed thoughts on heat wrapping your headers. I'd look more into it and make your choice weather or not you want to wrap them or not.

What is the point of wrapping the header?

Its like keeping the header insulated. Keeps the heat out of the engine bay.

Sorta like the purpose of a heat shield.<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by dre2day &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">What is the point of wrapping the header?</TD></TR></TABLE>

The only reason i have heard of to wrap headers, is to keep the temperature down in the engine compartment. Personally i have decided not to wrap my headers when i fit them. I would be very interested to hear other Luders opinions on whether to wrap or not to wrap. I have also heard wrapping can cause damage to headers. Bump for more info

a cooler engine bay is a bi-product but the reason for it is to insulate the header, hotter exhaust gasses flow better, meaning you'll get less of a back up

whether its noticeable, true, or what i don't know, but thats the theory behind it

i have researched, which is why i wanted to do it. no one says how much it takes to wrap though. you can wrap both ceramic and stainless. it doesn't really corroded from what i have seen, the wrap just imprints itself and stains. corrosion would bo all the way thru and create exhaust leaks if you ask me. i heard of the moisture problem as well. but if you have a header that is hotter than the dickens, how would moisture get trap. it would all steam out. your suppose to soak the wrap in water before install but the heat burns it off and after a day or so of funny smells your cool. plus this is not a permanent solution for me. i need a replacement for my dc header. its badly damaged and i don't want to get a tune with a bad header. i plan to boost in a couple of years so there is no point in getting a 1k header or doing an all out N/A motor on my heavy cb9. and the hotter the gases are the more free flowing the exhaust. it should help out the short ram a little. also, if it does corrode, i am looking at a header that is less than 100 bucks and wrap that is like 30-40 bucks. On the contrary there are a surprising amount of people turning to ebay headers. true you get what you pay for but your also paying for name brand headers that aren't really superior than the ebay ones.
