5 lug conversion necessary for HPDE?
just curious. I have a 4 lug 92 Si with the re-drilled prelude front disks. I have about 200 whp.
I plan on tracking the car, and am wondering wether the stock 4 lug setup is sufficient. I will be using R compound tires.
I've seen a Neon lose a wheel in front of we and hit the wall because the knuckle broke, and am nervous about that now.
is a 5 luch conversion significantly stronger than the stock 4 lug setup?
I've searched, but there's so much noise I don't know how to filter through it.
Thanks in advance.

Neons are much worse than Hondas about breaking hubs. 4-lug should be fine. If the hubs and bearings haven't been replaced in a while, may want to think about replacement.

just stick with the 4x100. plenty of wheel choices, you wont have to pay a bunch just to get the JDM fantastic 5 lug. an extra lug supporting the load of each wheel seems like it would be helpful but i dont think its even close to necessary. there are plenty of very fast cars with alot more power running 4 lug in every form of racing. i wouldnt worry about it.
4 lug is fine, on your car.

I saw that happen with a Neon SRT4 at Mid-Ohio the end of May 2007. Were you there?

dont worry about it. 4 lugs are fine.... Im sure there is more to the failure on that neon than just 4 lugs. Freak accidents or mechanical failures just happen sometimes.

I have had no issues with my 4 lug Teg over the last 3 years of events..........
Most HC cars are 4 lug as well..... you will not have an issue

That change is illegal for SCCA Improved Touring, NASA Honda Challenge H3-H5. I think Dave's point was that SCCA and NASA both think that it's safe enough for wheel-to-wheel racing to keep the 4-lugs on Preludes and Integras, so don't worry about it.

Nope.
It may be stronger, but not significantly.
There is no real advantage of going with the 5 lug, and all you're doing is adding unsprung weight.
We run 4 lug on the rally cars, and they get stresses that are unlikely to be seen on any road race car. We've never had a hub failure (although we have bent many control arms, trailing arms, radius rods, etc.).

I've never heard of an issue at HPDEs I've gone to. They don't even look at the wheels, assuming that the owner has already done his own tech inspection.
Performance? No, 4-lug weighs less. I've never heard of it being a safety issue - however, I have read a couple posts saying that some HPDE organizers don't like "multi-lug" wheels. Those are the ones (I think) that have 8 holes in them for different lug spacing. The concern is that the hub will crack due to the holes being so close together. Don't know how warranted the concern is... anyone actually seen one fail? (Hitting curbs doesn't count!)
Not needed. I have a CTR 5-lug on my car and even with OEM ITR pads and the stock 96 DX MC it is more than enough power. If my car had a lot more power then it could be useful. Either way you can do anything (upgrade wise) with 4-lug that you can with 5-lug. I do like it better than the stock brakes though.
for the extra weight, its not worth it....I have run full on goodyear slicks before....in a 200 hp coupe with 9" wide slicks....never had a problem with over 200k on the hubs....
