Default question is this grey or primer?

i see a lot of race cars use the grey engine bay paint.
Is it just primer then clear to make it glossy?
or is it really painted a flat grey then clear to make it glossy?
thanks

I did try to search for "grey engine bay" in this forum but couldn't find anything unless i'm using the wrong key words in my search

here's a picture of what im talking about

That color is often referred to as "battleship grey." People in the racing industry like to use this color on the engine bay, undercarriage and interior because it shows cracks and/or fractures very well. It's faster and easier to diagnose problems when they are more visible. Of course, now the hardparkers spray it on their every day Civics so they can pretend they have race cars on Friday and Saturday night.

yea i used to see it in magazines with lots of race cars.
However, recently i've been seeing it more and more in regular day cars, so i started wondering about it.

thanks for the response

that's what i thought it was, ust primer and clear coat to get the gloss finish.

but then it also kinda looks like a flat grey paint with clear as well.

it's primer...just reduced a little more (usually by means of more 2k hardener) to make SEALER. and yes, that is all that is: sealer with clear on top.

sorry i didn't search through the thread for that. IMO it would be easier and cheaper to just tint your sealer to whatever grey you'd like and skip basing out underhood stuff.
