I found this out when I was lowering my car. Is my boot messed up, could i replace just the boot or do i need to replace the whole steering rack. I dont feel anything while driving its normal, just like a scratching metal sound when I take turns.

They should be replaced.

The boots are cheap, it's the labor that's going to hurt.

BTW normally CV boots refer to the axles.

yea that isnt your CV boots/joints. That is the inner tie rods

 

ok you need at least the boots, if the dirt has contaminated the inner tie rod joint, its the thing inside the boot. reguardless, to replace the boot, the outer tie rod has to come off to change the boot or the inner tie rod joint. so no metter what you will need an alignment. i would reccomend new inner tie rod joints, and i dont think any of this has anything to do with a screeching sound. overall, if you dont fix those boots, grit will rip up the radial seals on the end of the rack, which means loss of fluid from a non-repairable spot, and then you WILL need a rack

 

i think they are cheap ( tie rod ends)just replace them . that would be your best bet ,

The boots you are refering to are called gear bellows. They protect the greaseable link of the inner tie rod end. Replacing those is a piece of cake. Might as well replace your inner tie rod ends if they are in bad condition.

Not to sound ghetto but my tie rod boots on my ej coupe have been like that for years and I haven't had any problems. They should def be closed though. Just get some zip ties or adjustable clamps and clamp the boot over the outer tie rod to where the insides aren't showing. If you replacethem you will have to get an allignment.

yea don't do that, change your tie rod ends.

 

so like I just change the outer rods, where would i buy that?
