you need a voltage meter.

what exactly is going on with your car?

If #1 cylinder is missing and you suspect the injector, swap #1 injector with #2 injector and see if #2 cylinder is missing then you know that the injector is bad. Is that what your talking about?

Well I really don't know exactly. Ill try to explain. My car is a 97 EJ8 completely stock except intake. I did a full tune up wire rotor etc. Even the pcv. My car currently gives me about 23mpg at best, and that's granny shifting at 3000rpm and cruising in 4th and 5th in the streets. If I drive normal not even punching it as much I get 20mpg. To me that don't sound right. Also in my last smog a couple of weeks ago my car passed but barely. Here are the results:

At 15 mph
HC measured 66 and max is 66
CO meas.0.19 max 0.57 so not bad.
NO meas. 385 max is 487.

At 25mph
HC measured 48 and max is 49
Co meas.0.26 max is 0.55
No meas. 136 max is 774.

So basically my problem is HC. And I don't know what to look for. Any help you can provide is appreciated. Thanx .

Yea, your mileage blows. My EJ8 D16Y8/supercharged was getting over 28 mpg before.

Sounds like you're running really really rich, and given that your only mod is an intake, I'd be inclined to say look at your intake air temp sensor on your intake and make sure 1) that it's there (duh), and 2) that it's working right. I don't know the acceptable resistance off the top of my head but a service manual will tell you.

If bad, replace it. It's probably making the ECU think it's extremely cold out so it's richening the mixture.

Yeah that's what I figured, bad mileage. Funny thing is that the smog results were when I had the stock intake on. How about bad fuel filter? Could that affect it? I mean I don't think that's ever been changed atleast I haven't changed it.

Although a fuel filter needs to be changed every now and again, it's not going to cause a super rich condition. Your pressure regulator will control an excess of fuel flow and a clogged filter will restrict flow, in turn possibly leaning your mixture.

Someone post up the accepted range for an IAT from a Haynes

unfortuntly if you dont have the equipment it could be somewhat hard to diagnois. but if you have a fuel pressure tester that replaces the banjo bolt in fuel filter I would start there check fuel pressure koeo and see if it holds stedy if not you have a leaking fuel injector then koer check to make sure fuel pressure is within spec. then hit the throttle to watch pressure rise to make sure regulator is funtioning if all these things are looking good then more than likely you dont have a injector problem but I have seen it before were car ran great untill it warmed up and then the injectors stared leaking after they were a certain temp. so then if you got a scan tool plug up to obd port and look a fuel trims, that is the way the computer compensates for irreagularites so anything over +5% is getting bad and anything under -5% is getting bad then make sure the 02 sensor is oscillating if you have access to a scope you should observe 10 oscillations per second at operating temp. make sure that it can go down to at least .1v and go up to a .8 if not 02 is bad and not altering fuel right. but like I said if you dont have access to this equipment it could be somewhat hard to diag and more than likely youll end up throwing parts at it untill you find it. but good luck!
