OIL >>>>>>>>>
My 2008 civic Si sedan has about 630 miles, after the car wash, i checked the engine oil level and it read to HALF . So I went to the honda dealership and bought some oil 5 30 the one thats recommended, I also asked the technician if it was NORMAL to see the oil level dropped to HALF from the dip stick, he said its because its like ahigh revv engine due to short or close gear ratios, so do u guys think thats normal ? Si owners, have ur engine oil dropped to half or more ?
I also read that 10 30 of honda motor oil s good for high revv and i asked the technician if they think if its ok i shld get that but they still recommended me to get the 5 30 instead....... let me know what do u guys think ? Im thinking maybe the reason why it dropped to half because i probably kept driving fast and hard but not that fast and hard but kind of and was shifting alot like kept the RPM up to 4K RPM every gears.....

I have an 07 si sedan and it's normal to have our cars burn oil (not dramatically but gradually).
Tell me did you ever check the dipstick after buying your car?? Where was it marked at??
I change my oil at ~3000 miles and check every week to see if I burn oil, which I do. From the point to which I pour in a fresh new synthetic oil, to the moment I drive the car and reach another ~3000 miles, and check the dipstick weekly, I see it gradually decrease (from almost to second dot of the dipstick to midpoint takes me ~3000 miles)
As for oil, only put in what's specified in the manual. If it states 5w30, then use 5w30 which 06-08 Si (k20z3) are to use. As for r18 owners, I believe they use 5w20.

It's not "normal" for any brand new car to burn oil. My car has almost 10k on the clock and has never even burned a drop. I attribute the oil loss to the OP not breaking the car in properly.

Mostly true. The manual also says that if you live in a climate where the temperature hardly drops below 60, that you can use 10w30.
OP, since you live in SoCal, you can probably run 10w30 year round (if not 9 months out of the year).

anyone care to explain why'd they'd run 10w30 at all? It's only has a higher viscosity then 5w30 at startup. Thicker oil than recommended when cold (read: startup) is not beneficial at.
read this: Dr. Haas - Motor Oil
If you don't see blue smoke, you're not "burning" oil. Using oil is fairly normal and Honda themselves claim a quart per 3000 miles isn't excessive. The si having 11:1 compression causes crankcase pressures to be higher than your average car and can contribute to oil "use"

Well my car has been burning oil since its been brought off the lot. I mean it was really bad at first at like 1600 miles it burned over a quart of oil. Good thing i read something on here that said they burned oil otherwise i woudl have never checked it till the first oil change. So the car was brought to honda and they told me that now i have to keep a record of progress and check the oil every time the car is filled up with gas. Also they put a bit to much oil in it to begin with. But lately it hasnt been not nearly as bad as it was and the car now has 3500 miles on it. The car was broken in properly till 1000 miles and is rarely beat on mostly with city driving.

I highly doubt a car with only 630 miles on it would consume that much oil normally.
There are two things that could possibly cause this. First, was you car on level ground? As I'm sure you know, not being on level ground can cause inaccurate readings since the oil would get bunched up in a different part of the oil pan (possibly away from the dipstick). Second, if you are checking the oil with the engine warm, you need to give it (the oil) enough time to trickle back down to the oil pan. You said you checked the oil after washing your car, so this probably wouldn't be an issue.

did you break in your engine hard or easy?
too much oil is as bad as too little. i brought my car to acura 3 times for an oil change and all 3 times they overfilled. now i do my own changes....

well i break in hard, my reason i was not used with 6 speed plus close gear ratio, i should have drove it easy upshifting for smoother acceleration, like the manual say. also i think and believe the reason why it consumed to half because i normally drive kind of hard and fast, but like the manual say, dont accelerate in rapid, man!, i hope i wld not have any plm with engine oil dropping down alot.
Yeah i checked the oil level was full from the dealer, and also the car was sittiing or parking straight, when checked the oil level, i just added up to full, from there ill be driving normal, and see if after another 700 miles, Im expecting not to see much oil level dropping down to half .
the exhaust dont show like oil burning or moist from the muffler tips, i used to have a car with oil burning and wld noticed the rear bumper and exhaust tip with oil burnt and kind of moisture
i hope and think my car shld be ok

I have a brand new 08 si, and did not lose any oil during the break in period. If you have any brand new car and it loses that much oil with only 600 miles there is something wrong.

HELL YEAH! you got that right. it should NEVER use that much oil if anything it shouldnt burn oil at all. when i bought my 07 Si it had only 7 miles on her and the oil it had in it wasnt all 5 qts of 5-30 oil. factory puts lube and anti-wear additives for the break in process. once its brocken in it would be a wise decission to change it out with pure 5-30. and yes, if you do live in high temperature states then 10-30 would be wise as well to use. high comp. and high rev engines should never be ran with thin oil. after my break in i changed over to 10w-30 right away and still have not burned a drop. and at one point i went back to 5-30 for the winter and it didnt hold up good at all. so i went back to 10-30. i would recomend fully synthetic as well. i personally like castrol syntec but now i use royal purple synthetic all the way as well as royal purple synchroguard tranny fluid and runs like gravy! smooth shifting and it feels like the HP is getting put to the ground the way an Si should feel. my motor is happy
