Default gas mileage tranny question for the true ef guro

just took a trip in my newer civic it's a std 4spd i didn't get bad gas mileage but i can get an extra 100 miles with my dx both cars are stock for the most part both have a header and a intake the std has a muffer (not stock) and the dx had a test pipe no cat. both are dpfi. now it makes sense that the 5spd would get better but i thought the std was supose to get more???

distance per tank is not the same as miles per gallon. You might have different size tanks.

To get MPG:
Fill up your tank.
Reset trip meter to zero.
drive, drive, drive... use a bunch of gas.
Refill your tank.
Divide the number on your trip meter by the number of gallons you just put in.

Even if they are the same sized tank comparing the miles per tank is useless, utterly useless.

find the MPG and then compare.

Damn I am so sick of people complaining about bad milage based only on miles per tank. When you measure "miles per tank" You are counting on your gas gauge to check you mileage . You need to know that this is THE most inaccurate gauge in the vehicle! Plus you are just guessing that your tank is empty.

judging milage is inaccurate as it is, at least try to get your the measurments the standard way.

I'm not too sure about the Si tranny getting better mileage... the 4-spd tranny is geared really really long. My guess is that they are pretty close on the highway.

As for gas tank capacities... I'm not sure of the specifics, but yeah different trim levels (and maybe different years?) had different size tanks.

HF/STD have smaller tanks then the DX and SI. 10 gallon tanks for the HF/STD and 11.9 gallon tanks for the DX and SI (#'s might be wrong so don't quote me).

Actualy, overall ratio is almost exactly the same between fourth gear on a STD transmission and fifth gear on an SI transmission. Fifth gear on a DX transmission is actually TALLER than fourth on a STD transmission. Given that the STD engine is so mildly cammed, it might actually give you better gas mileage on the freeway with a taller transmission.

Since when is there a DPFI engine in a 98? Did you do that swap or was it in there when you bought the car and the previous owner said it was a motor from a 98?

well the engine easily would have swapped over and to stay OBD0 they just reused the DPFi intake manifold.
