Default Couple Turbo Problem Questions

Hey just a few questions about my setup because its not so well right now.

1) After i've been driving for a little bit i pulled over to put some oil in and had the car turned off. I took off the oil cap and i could see smoke eminating from it, not like a stream of smoke, just like little bit of white smoke trickling out. What does that mean?

2) I dont have my downpipe connected to my exhaust and the downpipe points towards the passenger side seat currently. When im driving on the freeway normally not boosting, and i let go of the gas to slow down, i see smoke pour up from under the car into the cockpit from the area where my downpipe is pointing. I think it could be the turbo burning the oil. It also happens when i boost at least 5 pounds and let off i see smoke come up also.

3) Whats a good way to check if valve stem seals are going out or rings are bad and letting oil in? I think its just my turbo burning all the oil but i want to be sure its not these 2 things

Goodbye head gasket. Btw, I hope you are rolling the windows down when your cab begins to fill with smoke. Pull the head and check for brain damage.

Yes, i always roll with the windows down ever since i started burning oil a couple months ago ( I don't think it's healthy to be breathing that stuff ). Ok i'll look into the head gasket thing. Would that be in reference to the smoke from the oil cap question?

There is no reference to the smoke. There are just to many things to speculate on!! It could be a number of things that is causing the smoke. So ill go ahead and say it before someone else does. DO A COMPRESSION AND LEAKDOWN TEST then come back with your results and then you can better trouble shoot the problem. It is no good pointing fingers at one thing when there are some many things that could cause it! And I would connect your downpipe to the exhaust! Carbon Manoxide is not a very nice gas!!

And turbo burning oil is also not a good thing! If its got a blow seal on the exhaust side most likely it has a blown seal on the compressor side which means oil in the intake charge which means lower octane rating on the fuel!

Check the charge piping and see if there is any oil in it!!

white smoke usually means coolant... could be that your head is lifting in boost. what is the setup?

well... hook up an exhaust. problem solved

3) Whats a good way to check if valve stem seals are going out or rings are bad and letting oil in?

leak down test listen for it in the head (oil fill) (bent valve stem), bubbles in your coolant (radiator)(headgasket) or in your oil pan (rings). at least that's my understanding

I think its just my turbo burning all the oil but i want to be sure its not these 2 things </TD></TR></TABLE>

Good luck

Ya i suppose ill do the compression and leak down and come back with some results. I think the turbo seal on the hot side is busted, i see no oil on the other side, my last turbo had oil burning on that side and it was all black on the turbine.

My setup is as follows -

2000 usdm itr block
RS machine Sleeves
Bore to 84mm
Arias 9:0:1 Comp pistons
Eagle Rods
OEM USDM ITR head and valvetrain
RC 1000cc injectors
Walbro intake fuel pump, i forget the model
Garret 60 trim
Blox Manifold
Fftec dumptube
Spoolin turbo piping
Fftec downpipe
Tial wastegate
Moroso catchcan
Greddy Type-S blowoff valve
Yonaka Front Mount Intercooler
OEM Radiator

Been all black on the turbine doesnt mean its the turbo burning oil. That could of just as easy come from the motor. Here are the lists of things that it could most likely be.

Exhaust Smoke

1. Running to rich (smoke color dependent)
2. Piston Rings
3. Valve Seals
4. Blown turbo seal
5. Skuffed Cylinder Bores (Caused by a lean condition)
6. Blown head gasket (smoke color dependent)

Smoke from Breather or Oil Cap or Dipstick

1. Broken Rings Lands
2. Piston Rings
3. Blown Head Gasket

By the way nice setup!!!

so nothing done to the head?
not even head bolts?
I'm not very good with DOHC so...
what type of numbers are you putting down?
going by what Steven said it looks like the HG is the common denominator so start with looking at that.

is this a fresh build?
how many miles are on it?

Thanks for the compliments

Haven't had her dyno'ed yet, but im assuming 350-400whp from what i've raced before on street/freeway ( stage 3 SRT-4's, 500whp+ mustangs ).

I think i will try the breather test on lunch break since i'm posting from work, thats the easiest thing for me right now. I know that i am running a little rich. I am going to buy a new turbo anyways because i got this one used from someone and i think he lied to me about the miles on it

*EDIT*

Nope not a fresh build, its been on for a while, at least a year.

What fuel managment are you running?

HOw do you know you are running rich?

If i was you i wouldnt drive anymore till you get it to a dyno!! Such a nice setup and no dyno tune. That is like a cake with no icing!! LOL
You could slowly be destroying your enigne not having it tuned. You are really lucky it has lasted this long!

A guy i know up north from me had the car put together and done. He had a street tune done on it for 15 psi, and he took it to the track to drag a couple times that i know of. Im using p28 tuned with chrome. He told me it was running a little rich so he wouldnt blow up. I think my timing may be off as well. I think my ecu might be faulty or going bad as well. I need to get these checked also

wow sounds like you got some work to do
no doubt that it will be sick once complete
get that **** tuned... that could solve most all your problems (you still need to hook up that exhaust )
